Kid-friendly Namhansanseong bakery café with four-season views: Sum

In short

Sum (숨) is a bakery café on Ojeon-gil in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. After a walk at Namhansanseong, the writer's family had coffee and a wide choice of breads by Sum's floor-to-ceiling windows, stayed comfortably with the kids thanks to the roomy space, and packed their leftover bread themselves at the 1st-floor corner. Sum is a good window-view bakery café for resting with kids after a Namhansanseong walk or drive.

A good café to stop at after a Namhansanseong walk?

After a walk on Namhansanseong, our family always stops at Sum (숨), a café near the fortress. You get nature views through the floor-to-ceiling windows, plus coffee and bakery items, all in one place.

Namhansanseong shows a different scenery every season, so it's great for a drive and great for a family walk. We visit fairly often, and there's one place we always end up at after the walk: Sum, the Namhansanseong café.

Lots of people visiting Namhansanseong probably look for a café to rest in for a bit. If you want a cup of coffee and good bakery items in a nice space, I'd recommend Sum. The nature view coming in through the big windows gives it a different charm each season, and I can see why so many people stop here on their Namhansanseong drive.

  • People who love a wide variety of bakery items

Sum as a stop on a Namhansanseong drive

Sum is a café I'd recommend stopping at at least once during a Namhansanseong drive. From the moment we parked and walked in, it felt warm.

The Namhansanseong drive alone puts you in a good mood. Driving along a road full of green trees naturally relaxes you, and the pretty cafés along the way make it easy to take a break. Among them, Sum was the one I'd recommend stopping at if you visit Namhansanseong. From the moment we parked and stepped inside, the atmosphere felt warm.

What are the four-season views through Sum's big windows like?

My favorite thing about Sum was the floor-to-ceiling windows. Sunlight pours in through the wide glass, making the interior brighter and warmer.

Sitting by the window with a coffee and looking outside, I lost track of time. Getting a different view each season is a big plus too. I imagine green scenery in spring, a cool forest feel in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and calm snowy views in winter, each with its own charm.

Even when we came with the kids, the space was wide and not stuffy, so we could stay comfortably. It's good for quiet conversation, and the mood really suits a relaxed time with family.

Does Sum have a wide variety of bakery items?

Sum has a really wide variety of bakery items, not just coffee. From sweet desserts to hearty breads, you can pick whatever suits your taste.

We're a bread-loving family, so we browsed the bakery for a good while before ordering drinks. The breads looked freshly baked, and it was hard to decide what to pick. There were lots of breads that kids can eat easily too, so I think families would be happy here. Enjoying bakery items with coffee made our Namhansanseong outing feel extra special.

Is Sum in Namhansanseong easy to visit with kids?

Sum is spacious and doesn't feel stuffy, so visiting with kids wasn't a worry. When we go to a café with kids, the first things I look at are the seat spacing and the atmosphere, and on both counts it was comfortable.

It was good for resting a while, eating bread and drinks, and chatting, and we could relax while looking out the window together. It was a nice place to rest after walking Namhansanseong, and after the drive we enjoyed a cup of coffee at leisure.

Self-pack your leftover bread at the 1st-floor corner

At Sum you can pack the bread you couldn't finish yourself at the 1st-floor corner. We picked out so many different breads that being able to take the rest home was even better. It's at the 1st-floor corner, so go ahead and self-pack!

Is Sum worth a stop if you're going to Namhansanseong?

Namhansanseong has plenty of cafés with a nice mood, but Sum stuck with me more because of the warm sunlight through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the wide variety of bakery items. It's good for a break during a drive, and it really suits a relaxed time after a walk.

If you're planning a Namhansanseong drive in particular, I'd recommend stopping in the middle for coffee and bakery items and feeling a bit of everyday calm.
