Seongsu izakaya in Seoul with a 12-kind aged sashimi platter: Oukan

In short

Oukan is a Japanese izakaya on Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu, Seoul, one and a half floors up and a short walk from exit 4 of Seongsu Station. On a weekday evening a married couple took a window-side table for two and ordered the sashimi moriawase, a platter of 12 to 14 kinds of aged sashimi served with Oukan's house-simmered aged soy sauce, seaweed and wasabi, and emptied the plate in minutes. Between the calm black-toned room and the aged sashimi, Oukan is a Seongsu-dong date spot worth booking again.

A calm Seongsu-dong bar on a weekday evening: Oukan

On a weekday evening, my husband and I wanted somewhere a bit refined and atmospheric to sip a drink and chat quietly. Instead of the usual restaurants or a noisy generic bar, I went looking for a classy space that would feel calm yet special — and that's how I ended up at Oukan.

First look inside Oukan, an izakaya in Seongsu

This place struck me as perfect for anyone planning a Seongsu date with a good atmosphere, or wanting to enjoy delicate Japanese cooking while having a deep conversation with someone special. I'd been looking for exactly this kind of izakaya near Seongsu Station to step away from the daily grind for a bit, so I felt a flutter of excitement even before walking in.

Just off the lively streets near Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu, Oukan carries a quiet, refined charm from the very entrance. It was the perfect choice for a relaxed, enjoyable evening as a couple after a while away from Seongsu.

How to find Oukan from Seongsu Station exit 4

Oukan is a short walk from Seongsu Station exit 4, tucked into the alley of Yeonmujang-gil where soft lights begin to glow one by one. Its distinctly quiet, sophisticated look catches your eye right away.

It sits on the 1.5th floor of the building, so you climb a short flight of stairs to reach the entrance — and the fully glazed front gives it a wonderful sense of openness even before you go in. The storefront bears the stylish lettering 'Oukan' alongside an intricate crown motif, adding a neat but distinctive touch of luxury.

The signage and overall exterior are done in a heavy, sophisticated black tone that catches the eye from a distance.

The black standing sign next to the entrance displays the menu as carefully drawn illustrations, almost like admiring a piece of art. The exterior is striking enough to naturally stop passersby, and it would easily catch the eye of anyone scouting a Seongsu date spot.

The calm, dignified impression from the entrance put us in a great mood as we stepped inside.

Inside Oukan: seating and where the seats for two are

Stepping into Oukan, you're greeted by a calm, layered atmosphere typical of an upscale Japanese restaurant. The first thing to catch my eye was the open kitchen set handsomely at the front of the space.

Watching the chefs prep fresh ingredients and cook right in front of you builds trust in the food's hygiene and quality. In front of the open kitchen, a long bar table lined with soft, elegant strip lighting looked like a great spot for couples to sit close together for a Seongsu date.

We took a seat by the fully glazed window, which felt wonderfully open. This area is mainly set up as cozy couple's seating, perfect for chatting while looking out at the quiet alley outside.

On the inner wall was a bold rendering of Oukan's signature crown mark, and there were also neat tables for groups of 4 to 6. The overall look is built on a heavy black base, with wood tones on some walls and tables adding warmth to the sophisticated, traditional izakaya feel.

Even the ceiling is finished with an intricate lattice pattern, so wherever you look you get that feeling of being properly taken care of — a textbook example of a great izakaya near Seongsu Station.

What is on Oukan's food and drink menu?

Oukan's menu is neatly organized with a range of dishes rooted in traditional Japanese cuisine. We sat and looked it over slowly.

Oukan's Japanese menu

Centered on seasonal sashimi kept at peak freshness, the menu is filled with carefully rolled maki, nabe (hot pot) with deep, warm broth, and plenty of upscale fish dishes from savory grilled items to crispy fried ones.

There's also pasta for something light, crispy fries, and a sweet, soft castella cake, making it a well-rounded lineup for enjoying a proper meal alongside drinks.

The drink lineup is just as carefully put together, led by high-quality sake meant to bring out the flavors of the food, alongside traditional Japanese shochu and various whiskies to set the mood. For those who don't drink much or just want a light buzz, there's a good range of highballs, cold draft beer, and refreshing ades and sodas — a thoughtful touch.

A small bell sits on the neat table, and a gentle ring brought staff over quickly and kindly every time, making even ordering feel smooth and pleasant.

I felt sure we'd finally found a proper bar near Seongsu Station, so we ordered the sashimi moriawase and some cold drinks to enjoy while chatting calmly.

What is the 12–14 kind aged sashimi moriawase like?

Biscuits served as a starter snack

Oukan's sashimi moriawase is served as an assortment of 12 to 14 species of aged sashimi, depending on the day. After ordering, a neat plate of light biscuits arrived first as a basic snack.

As we chatted, picking up the crisp, savory biscuits one by one, the main event — the sashimi moriawase — finally arrived on the table in a stunning presentation. Served on handcrafted, upscale ceramic ware, the sashimi looked exceptional from the start.

After the food was set down, a staff member carefully explained the types of fish that made up that day's 12-to-14-species aged sashimi platter, along with the best way to enjoy each one.

I listened carefully to the explanation, but honestly, the names of the various fish slipped my mind the moment I turned away.

But one thing stuck with me clearly: it was delicious enough to make me gasp the moment it hit my mouth.

They said everything, starting with the soy sauce, is brewed in-house and carefully aged, and it showed — every piece of sashimi had remarkable freshness and umami.

From the chewy, springy texture of some cuts to the sweet shrimp and the melt-in-your-mouth squid, the natural flavor of each ingredient came through perfectly.

Wrapping the aged sashimi in crisp seaweed with a touch of wasabi, or dipping it in the house-made soy sauce, we cleared the plate in no time — barely pausing to talk.

Thanks to dishes built on care and time spent aging, I got to fully experience the charm of a great izakaya near Seongsu Station.

Why Oukan works as a Seongsu-dong date spot

Time at Oukan was more than just a meal — it brought a deep sense of being genuinely cared for and pampered. Sharing carefully made dishes under soft, warm lighting, our conversation grew deeper and more enjoyable than usual.

I could really feel that the store's slogan — treating every guest as if crowning them — wasn't just for show. That attention to detail, from the unseen cooking process to every dish and sauce, came through fully in both the flavor and the atmosphere.

Between the calm, upscale mood and the aged sashimi that was better than anything comparable I've had, this has become the first place I want to return to for a couple's date in Seongsu or a quiet gathering with friends.

If you want a genuine taste of Japanese cuisine and a refined bit of rest near Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu, this is a place I'd recommend without hesitation. It's a great choice for celebrating a special moment with someone, or treating yourself after a tiring day at work. Next time, I plan to come back with a glass of sake to try more of the signature dishes.
