What is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch?
Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch (훈이꽃게장 천안본점) is a Korean restaurant specializing in ganjang gejang (soy-marinated raw crab) in Yuryang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. I usually love soy-marinated crab, so I went on a friend's recommendation.
Honestly, soy crab divides people because of its fishy taste. But the clean, not-salty flavor here impressed me and I was satisfied. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant for a family meal or to take your parents, it's worth a look.

It's only about 2 months old, but it's already getting buzz in Cheonan for its soy crab.

The place is tidy and full of family groups, which gave it a proper Korean restaurant feel.

Ordering the crab set meal for 2 with my child
I visited with my child and ordered the crab set for 2 at Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch.

Freshness matters most for soy crab, so I was half excited and half worried at first, but my expectations rose the moment the table was set.
The crab set meal spread: impressive at first glance
The soy crab on the table caught my eye first.

This is the pot rice (solbap). Steam is rising... perfect for making nurungji (scorched rice).

Seaweed soup and steamed egg, which my child loves. The egg puffed up so nicely, doesn't it look tempting?

Is Huni Gejang's soy-marinated crab salty or fishy?
The soy sauce here was fairly clear, and instead of salty, it had a sweet, savory depth. The crab was cut up so it's easy to eat, and the red chili, green chili and sesame seeds on top looked appetizing.

Above all, the sauce wasn't too dark but clear, so I expected a clean taste. One bite and the crab was full of meat with almost no fishy smell. It wasn't just salty; it was sweet and savory, and the nickname "rice thief" fit perfectly.

Spicy marinated crab with plump, meaty flesh
The spicy marinated crab was plump with meat too. Not fishy, and delicious. There was a popular place in Insadong with all-you-can-eat spicy crab and a long line... it suddenly reminded me of that.
Once I mixed rice into the crab shell, I understood why so many people crave gejang.

Which side dishes come with the crab set?
The crab set came with a variety of Korean-meal side dishes: kimchi, seaweed salad, pickled vegetables, steamed egg and more. The basic sides were good, not just the main dish.
Having sides between bites of soy crab reset my palate and made it even tastier. The salty crab went well with the clean side dishes, so overall I was very satisfied.

And off to one side, a whole row of pots!
