Office snack walnut pastries in Cheonan: plain + Lotus at Cheonandang
In short
Cheonandang Dandae Branch (천안당 단대점) is a roadside walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja, walnut-shaped cakes) shop on Manghyang-ro in Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam, that bakes with 100% Korean wheat. The writer bought 15 classic red bean walnut pastries and 15 Lotus walnut pastries for ₩13,000, tried them at home and shared them with coworkers, who loved them. Verdict: the classic is good, but the less sweet, subtly flavored Lotus walnut pastry at Cheonandang Dandae Branch is well worth adding to your order.

What's the first thing you think of when you hear Cheonan? Walnut pastries (hodu-gwaja), of course 😆

Where is Cheonandang Dandae Branch, and is there parking?
Cheonandang Dandae Branch (천안당 단대점) is a walnut pastry shop on a big road, Manghyang-ro in Cheonan, Chungnam, open daily from 07:30 to 20:00. It has parking, and accepts easy-pay and parcel delivery orders.
I was in Cheonan on an errand and couldn't just walk past without buying walnut pastries, so I stopped by Cheonandang Dandae Branch, a famous walnut pastry spot in Cheonan.
- Location: Manghyang-ro, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam
- Hours: daily 07:30–20:00
- Parking available, easy-pay accepted, parcel delivery available

Cheonandang Dandae Branch sits right on a big road, so it was easy to find.

Best of all, there's plenty of parking in front of the shop, which made things so convenient.

What is Cheonandang Dandae Branch like inside?
Step inside and you get a faint, nutty-sweet smell of walnut pastries. They were also selling whole-grain chips in one corner of the shop.

There was a notice saying the shop is certified by Cheonan city as a top-grade walnut pastry establishment. And since Cheonandang makes its pastries with 100% Korean wheat, I somehow trusted them even more.

Cheonandang walnut pastry menu and prices
The menu at Cheonandang Dandae Branch has three walnut pastries: 100% Korean wheat walnut pastries, red bean butter walnut pastries, and Lotus walnut pastries. The classic starts at ₩5,000 for 15 pieces.

- 100% Korean wheat walnut pastries: 15 pcs ₩5,000 / 30 pcs ₩10,000 / 45 pcs ₩15,000 / 60 pcs ₩20,000 / gift sets ₩30,000 and ₩50,000

- Red bean butter walnut pastries: 16 pcs ₩10,000

- Lotus walnut pastries: 15 pcs ₩8,000
I bought 15 classic walnut pastries and 15 Lotus walnut pastries. Together, that came to ₩13,000!

I also took the owner's business card, and they say they can ship nationwide!

The pastries come in boxes, so they looked great for gifts.

Even while I was buying mine, customers kept coming in and buying several boxes at a time as gifts. Guess Cheonan really does mean walnut pastries!!

How does the 100% Korean wheat red bean walnut pastry taste?
The classic Cheonandang walnut pastries are individually wrapped, with moist batter, lightly sweet red bean paste and big pieces of walnut inside. I carried them home carefully and took them out; the Lotus ones were labeled "Lotus" separately on the box.

First I opened the 100% Korean wheat red bean walnut pastries, and each one was carefully wrapped by itself.

The soft batter is generously filled with lightly sweet red bean paste, and inside there's a big piece of walnut, so the nutty flavor gets better the more you chew. Really good.

The batter is moist and soft, and one didn't feel like I'd eaten anything (?), so I kept unwrapping one after another and popping them in. Dangerously addictive.
Is the Lotus walnut pastry too sweet?
Cheonandang's Lotus walnut pastry is a walnut pastry dusted with Lotus powder, and the Lotus flavor is subtle, so it was less sweet than I expected. Once I pulled myself together, I opened the Lotus box too. This was the one I was personally most curious about!!
Lotus powder was sprinkled lightly over the pastries.

Lotus is sweet by nature, so I was a little worried it would be too sweet, but that thought vanished the moment I took a bite. The Lotus flavor isn't loud; it blends in gently, keeping the nutty taste of the pastry while pairing nicely.
You can definitely taste the Lotus, but it isn't overwhelming and isn't very sweet. Personally, it was a surprising and delicious pick.

Are Cheonan walnut pastries a good office snack or gift?
I packed some Cheonandang walnut pastries separately, took them to the office and shared them with my coworkers. Everyone said they were delicious, and the reaction was so good that I felt proud.

The price is easy on the wallet, so they seem perfect as a casual gift or a little something to show you thought of people haha.

When you come to Cheonan, you really do have to take walnut pastries home. If you're looking for a good walnut pastry shop in Cheonan, I recommend visiting Cheonandang Dandae Branch, which uses 100% Korean wheat. Next time I'm in Cheonan I'll stop by again and load up!! I especially recommend the Lotus walnut pastries!!
