Yangjae Station charcoal chicken BBQ brunch at 11 a.m.: Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok is a charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (Korean grilled chicken) restaurant within a 5-minute walk of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On an 11 a.m. reservation, the writer was the first guest and ordered the Yanggyegok Hanpan platter (55,000 won), Deulgye-guksu noodles (11,000 won) and beer. Staff grilled salt and gochujang dakgalbi, chicken cartilage and deodeok (grilled mountain root) over charcoal, eaten in lettuce wraps. For a hearty brunch of something other than pork belly, Yanggyegok near Yangjae Station is a solid pick.

How do you get to Yanggyegok near Yangjae Station?

Yanggyegok is a charcoal chicken BBQ restaurant within a 5-minute walk of Yangjae Station, so it's not hard to find. I was searching for meat restaurants near Yangjae Station and ended up here. Walk straight from the station, turn left at Olive Young, and you'll see a sign with a chicken model that catches the eye.

I think even first-time visitors can find it fairly easily.

What is the atmosphere like inside Yanggyegok?

The interior is built around black tones, which felt clean and calm. There are round tables, and I loved the quirky detail of tissue hanging at every table. The vibe is a little different from a typical Korean BBQ place, which caught my eye.

We booked for 11 a.m. and were the first guests when we arrived. But lots of reserved seats were already set up, so it seems many people book ahead.

Every table is set up for grilling over charcoal, so I was already excited before the meal began.

What are the Yanggyegok menu and prices, and what did we order?

Yanggyegok menu

We ordered the Yanggyegok Hanpan platter, perilla noodles and a cold beer.

  • Yanggyegok Hanpan ₩55,000
  • Beer ₩6,000
  • Perilla noodles (deulgye-guksu) ₩11,000

The Hanpan comes with salt dakgalbi (chicken BBQ), gochujang dakgalbi, chicken cartilage and deodeok (bellflower root), so you get several flavors.

I liked being able to try different cuts instead of just one kind of meat. We also joined the receipt review event and got a highball. Having an extra drink to go with the meal made me quietly happy. 👍

How does the charcoal-grilled Yanggyegok Hanpan taste?

The Hanpan came generously laid out with dipping sauce, radish wraps, lettuce, perilla leaves and other sides.

Charcoal dakgalbi grilled by the staff

Staff grilled the meat over the charcoal for us, so we could eat comfortably. They helped us get the meat cooked just right, so we could focus on the food instead of the grilling.

Salt and gochujang dakgalbi in wraps

We started with the salt dakgalbi. It was light and clean, while the gochujang (red chili paste) dakgalbi had a rich savory seasoning, so each had its own charm. I put dakgalbi, sauce and salmon roe on a perilla leaf and ate it in one bite, and the fragrant leaf went well with the meat. Wrapped in radish wraps, it picked up a tangy note and felt different again.

The dakgalbi was tasty even without any wraps, so you can enjoy it however you like.

Deodeok and chicken cartilage grilled together

We also grilled the deodeok that came with the Hanpan. It kept its crunchy texture and that distinctive deodeok aroma, and it was nice to alternate with the meat.

From the mild meat to the spicy seasoned dakgalbi to the uniquely textured cartilage, we got to taste a bit of everything, and I was glad we ordered the Hanpan. With a cold beer, our relaxed brunch was even more enjoyable.

How are the Yanggyegok Deulgye noodles (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles)?

The noodles are buckwheat noodles (makguksu) with plenty of chicken and vegetables, a more generous dish than I expected. I ordered them along with the meat, and finishing with noodles made the meal even more filling. It was a thoroughly satisfying brunch.

Nostalgic music and a relaxed meal

Another nice thing about eating at Yanggyegok that day was the soft music playing in the restaurant. I heard a song by Shin Seung-hun, and memories of my younger days suddenly came back. Eating good food while hearing a familiar song, I felt swept back to that era for a moment. Great food plus music that brings back memories made it an even happier time.
