Chuseok morning pork noodles in Aewol, Jeju with locals: Handam Guksu
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is an ocean-view gogi guksu (pork noodle soup) restaurant near the Handam Coastal Walk in Aewol, Jeju. Arriving for the 10am opening on Chuseok morning, the writer ordered sagol pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles and dombe naeng suyuk (chilled sliced boiled pork), each noodle dish 10,000 won and the pork 15,000 won. The regular noodle portions were already generous, and the pork tasted clean rather than greasy despite its thick fat layer. Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a good place for a filling meal with the Aewol sea in view through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Here's my review video of Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a pork noodle restaurant in Aewol I've been curious about!

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, an Aewol pork noodle place I've been curious about since last year
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle (gogi guksu) restaurant right near Handam Coastal Trail in Aewol, Jeju. I'm pretty serious about making sure I eat gogi guksu at least once whenever I'm on Jeju. On last year's trip, I was out looking at the Aewol sea and spotted a long waiting line outside Handam Guksu — I remember thinking, is this THE pork noodle place in Aewol? — and filed it away.
Back then I'd already eaten gogi guksu right after landing on Jeju, so I just walked past. This time around, since I was in Aewol anyway, I finally made it to Handam Guksu. It's right by Handam Coastal Trail, so it's an easy stop after a walk, and honestly the biggest draw was being able to eat gogi guksu while looking out at the Jeju sea through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Since I'd been curious about this place since last year, let me walk through how it actually tasted. Here's my Aewol pork noodle review of Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, starting now :)

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch location, hours, and parking
Handam Guksu is at 33 Aewol-ro, Aewol-eup, 1st floor, and it's close to Handam Coastal Trail, so it's a great spot to stop into after a walk.
- Address: 33 Aewol-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do, South Korea (1st floor)
- Hours: Monday 10:00 - 16:20 / Tuesday - Sunday 10:00 - 20:30
- Break time: 15:30 - 17:30
- Last order: Monday 15:40 / Tuesday - Sunday 19:50
- Parking available
There's a parking lot in front of Handam Guksu, but it's not very spacious. If it's full, you can park in the open space in front of or beside the restaurant, and apparently the Randy's Donuts lot or the Handam Trail lot offer 1 hour of free parking support, so it's worth keeping in mind if you're driving.
Handam Guksu's storefront on the main Aewol coastal road

Handam Guksu sits right on the main road of the Aewol coastal drive. The sign is easy to spot from the road even while driving, so it's a convenient stop if you're cruising around Aewol and looking for somewhere to eat.
Is the inside of Handam Guksu really an ocean view?

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is an ocean-view restaurant with the Aewol sea visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The moment I stepped inside, the wide open sea was the first thing I saw. Getting to enjoy delicious gogi guksu while looking out at the open sea made my heart flutter just sitting there haha (thump thump~💗)
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch has no private rooms, and the space is neatly arranged mostly with 4-person tables. High chairs are also well prepared, so it looked comfortable enough to visit with kids too.

Chuseok morning 10am open-run — when does the wait actually start?
To avoid the wait, I did an open-run right at the 10am opening, but by around 10:30am the tables had already started filling up. By the time I arrived, there were already several parties — a couple eating, a solo diner, and families too.
Since I visited on Chuseok, there were far more locals than tourists. It really confirmed that this is a pork noodle spot locals in Aewol love too! By the time the place hit full capacity, staff set up the Catchtable waiting kiosk outside. There were several waiting chairs set up in front of the restaurant, so I figured you could wait comfortably even if you had to.
Handam Guksu menu and prices — do you need the extra-large size?

Handam Guksu offers sagol pork noodles, mala pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, and pork rice soup. Noodle dishes can be upgraded to extra-large for ₩1,000 more. Side dishes include dombe naeng suyuk (cold sliced pork), house-made pork tteokgalbi, and pork mandu.

- Sagol pork noodles: ₩10,000
- Dongchimi bibim noodles: ₩10,000
- Dombe naeng suyuk: ₩15,000
We went all in and ordered the sagol pork noodles, the dongchimi bibim noodles, and the dombe naeng suyuk. We briefly considered getting both noodle dishes extra-large, but my husband saw the portions at another table and said even the regular size looked like a lot, so we ordered regular. Turns out, even the regular size had a really generous amount of noodles — plenty for two people sharing one bowl each! We would've been in trouble if we'd gone extra-large haha.
Handam Guksu's self-serve bar and side dishes (kids' tableware included!)

Side dishes at Handam Guksu are self-serve, and the bar even has children's tableware, baby spoons, and forks. While we were enjoying the ocean view after ordering, a staff member kindly let us know we could help ourselves to side dishes at the self-serve bar. Having kids' tableware ready to go was a thoughtful touch for families!

The side dishes were a clean, simple lineup that paired well with the pork noodles — fresh-tossed kimchi, dried radish strips, cheongyang chili peppers, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean dip).

To avoid wasting food, we took just enough to eat, finished setting the table, and waited for our delicious pork noodles to arrive while looking out at the cool sea.
Visually stunning! A generously loaded spread from Handam Guksu

The dombe naeng suyuk came out first, followed by the sagol pork noodles and bibim noodles. Once everything was laid out on the table — the pork noodles in brass-toned bowls, the dombe naeng suyuk neatly arranged on a cutting board — it looked seriously generous.
How does the sagol pork noodle broth taste? Rich but light
Handam Guksu's sagol pork noodles came in a milky, clear sagol (bone) broth with big chunks of dombe pork and bean sprouts — appetizing just to look at.

I tried a piece of the dombe pork on its own first, and it was moist, tender, with no gamy smell at all — genuinely delicious meat! I gave the noodles a stir so they wouldn't get soggy, and there were way more noodles in there than I expected — enough that finishing the whole bowl would really fill you up.
Putting a piece of dombe pork on the noodles and adding kimchi for a full bite confirmed that kimchi really is the best pairing for pork noodles haha 💛 The broth had a rich sagol flavor but was still light, and thanks to the bean sprouts, the aftertaste was slightly refreshing. Even with such a rich sagol broth, it wasn't heavy at all — I could see this working well as a hangover cure in the morning!
Dongchimi bibim noodles — I mistook the topping portion for a bibimbap

Handam Guksu's dongchimi bibim noodles arrive piled so high with cucumber, bean sprouts, and Jeju pork that the noodles are barely visible. Honestly, when it first came out, I thought it was bibimbap haha. The colorful, generous toppings made it look more like a bibimbap than a bibim noodle dish. Haha.

There were also quite a lot of noodles under the bibim toppings. After mixing everything evenly, I tried adding a bit of the dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) broth that came alongside — the tangy, refreshing dongchimi broth softened the seasoning and gave it a whole different flavor. What I liked was that the tanginess was more moderate than other bibim noodle dishes, not too sharp, which suited my taste well. ^^
Dombe naeng suyuk — does all that fat make it greasy?
Handam Guksu's dombe naeng suyuk looks like pyeonyuk (boiled sliced pork) with quite a lot of visible fat, but once I tried it, there was absolutely no greasiness. At first I worried it might be too rich, but the reality was completely different. The skin part was chewy and even the fatty parts were light — the visual had me a little worried, but it turned out clean and delicious, a real plot twist.

Topping a piece of dombe naeng suyuk with salty dried radish strips and spicy chili peppers added crunch and heat to the chewy meat — exactly to my taste.
The thickness of the sliced dombe naeng suyuk was also satisfying — thin and even. Adding the house-made sauce on top brought out even more savory depth on the light meat, the kind of dish where one bite makes you want another~

Overall verdict on Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch was a great place for a filling bowl of pork noodles with an ocean view after a walk along Handam Coastal Trail. I'd been curious about Handam Guksu since last year's Jeju trip, and finally got to try it this time — the food was good, but what I really loved was the location, so close to Handam Coastal Trail that it's easy to stop by after a walk.
Being able to eat while looking out at the Aewol sea through the floor-to-ceiling windows, with such generous portions, made for a really satisfying meal. If you're looking for a good pork noodle spot in Aewol, I'd say it's worth stopping by after a walk along Handam Coastal Trail.
