Korean BBQ by Hapjeong Station after figure shopping: Jeongyukdo

In short

Jeongyukdo is a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building right by Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul, offering Korean pork (handon) and hanwoo beef sets plus an outdoor street-stall-style seating area. After a weekend of browsing figures in Hongdae and Hapjeong, a couple grilled the Jeongyukdo pork set (fresh pork ribs, pork belly and kkotmoksal neck) for an early dinner and added bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles). Jeongyukdo is clean, free of greasy smells and generous with side dishes, a Hapjeong Station BBQ spot worth trying, especially outdoors on a cool evening.

When did we visit Jeongyukdo near Hapjeong Station?

We went to this Hapjeong BBQ restaurant, Jeongyukdo (정육도), for an early weekend dinner. My husband and I spent a lovely weekend looking at figures around Hongdae and Hapjeong, then went for an early dinner. He plays futsal too, so we decided on meat~ And the place we picked is... Jeongyukdo in Hapjeong!

Jeongyukdo is very close to Hapjeong subway station!

Where is the Jeongyukdo entrance?

Jeongyukdo is on the 2nd floor of the building, and the entrance is at the back. I've walked around Hapjeong forever, but this was my first time going into this building.

It's on the 2nd floor, so where's the entrance? Go around the back of the building and the Jeongyukdo entrance appears like this!

When is Jeongyukdo's outdoor seating worth it?

Jeongyukdo has this outdoor patio vibe too, you know? It was hot the day we visited, so we couldn't use it... but once the weather gets cooler it would be perfect!

What is the atmosphere like inside Jeongyukdo?

The shop is clean with no greasy smell, and lots of seats face the windows. Now let's head inside. Let's go~

It's on the 2nd floor and looks closed from the outside, but inside it was clean, without a hint of grease smell. Overall tidy, and I liked that there are many seats looking out the windows.

What is on the Jeongyukdo menu?

The menu is split into hanwoo (Korean beef) and hanbeef-pork sets, single cuts, meals and drinking snacks, and a lunch menu. Here are the signature items and sets.

  • Jeongyukdo spicy braised short ribs
  • Jeongyukdo pre-grilled marinated ribs

They sell draft beer here, you know? Draft beer and soju, cheers!

What is in the Jeongyukdo Korean pork set?

The pork set is 200g fresh pork ribs, 150g pork belly and 150g flower neck. And here comes the pork set!

A staff member first removes the rib bones from the fresh ribs, and after that you just grill freely.

Pork set extra: doenjang stew or myeoljeot dip

If you order a pork set at Jeongyukdo, you get doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) or myeoljeot (salted anchovy dip) as a free service! I don't like myeoljeot so I chose the stew, and it was a bit salty... but meat plus stew is a perfect combo.

Tips for grilling over Jeongyukdo's charcoal

The charcoal at Jeongyukdo is strong and browns the meat quite quickly, so it's best to turn the pieces often so only the outside doesn't burn. You can just grill the meat however you like, but since the outside can burn, I put my one month of experience working at a grill restaurant to use.

Hyaaah!! I rolled the pieces around in my own way as I grilled.

First bite of fresh pork ribs with salt

The first bite is definitely salt, right? I tried the fresh ribs first, and the meat was nicely golden, not too dry and not too greasy, just right.

A golden-grilled piece of fresh rib at Jeongyukdo

This was some kind of jeotgal (salted seafood) and it was tangy and so good!!

Kkotmoksal pork neck and mushrooms

Next I grill the neck meat until golden too. The mushrooms next to it look burnt, you say? I grill them front and back until they burn.^^

There were lots of side dishes to go with the meat, so you can taste this and that however you like, which I loved.

Pork belly to finish

The last cut in the set, pork belly! Look at that color, still bright pink. I think I'm pretty good at grilling meat.

Is Jeongyukdo's bibim naengmyeon worth adding?

The bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) at Jeongyukdo was a good finisher for people who like bold flavors. As the meat was running out, I pulled out the menu to see what else to order~ and my husband said the bibim naengmyeon photo on the menu looked so good!

Bibim naengmyeon ordered as an add-on at Jeongyukdo

So we added bibim naengmyeon right away~ When we ordered it, they also gave us mustard and vinegar.

Bibim naengmyeon verdict: it was perfect for my husband, who likes his food bold and punchy.

Slurp slurp slurp!

Jeongyukdo near Hapjeong Station: final verdict

I liked that Jeongyukdo has a clean shop, decent meat and lots of side dishes to go with it. Once the weather cools down, enjoying the outdoor patio would be a perfect fit~
