Eel rice bowl restaurant in Daechi-dong: solo tiered-box set, Manmok

In short

Manmok (鰻木) is an eel rice bowl restaurant in Daechi-dong, near Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, that uses Gochang freshwater eel. Dining alone, the writer had Manmok's Kanto-style grilled eel rice bowl as a tiered box set, topped it with wasabi, paired it with Ebisu draft beer and received matcha ice cream for dessert. With its quiet, refined atmosphere, Manmok is well worth recommending for a solo meal or a restorative weekday office lunch.

What's the atmosphere like at Manmok near Seolleung Station?

Manmok in Daechi-dong has a classy wood-toned look from the outside, and inside there are both booth seats and group tables. The refined wood-toned interior caught my eye right from the exterior. 🪵

The cozy, comfortable interior made me feel treated like a guest the moment I walked in. 👑 There's everything from booth seats for a private meal to neatly arranged group tables. ✨ I heard Manmok cooks only with Gochang freshwater eel, which is considered Korea's best eel-producing region. 🐟

How is the eel bowl grilled at Manmok?

I heard Manmok uses the traditional Kanto-style method: the eel is grilled once, steamed, then brushed with sauce and grilled over charcoal two more times. This Kanto-style method is the reason I recommend Manmok so strongly. 👨‍🍳 After the first grilling and steaming, the eel is coated in a secret sauce and charcoal-grilled twice more. 🔥 Through this careful process, the eel's typical greasiness disappears and only a clean, mild flavor remains. 😋

Maybe because so much care goes into the dish, I was really excited even before the food arrived! 😍 It's a great Gangnam eel bowl place to visit with loved ones on a special day. 🥂

The bento-box set and how the eel bowl tastes

Manmok's eel bowl comes in a tiered bento box (chanhap) with salad, clear soup, wasabi and ginger. The menu I'd been waiting for finally arrived, neatly presented in an elegant bento-box set! 🍱

The moment I opened the lid, the golden, glossy eel made me gasp in admiration. 🌟 The neat side dishes, including the salad, clear soup, wasabi and ginger, were really excellent too. 🥗

Ebisu draft beer with wasabi

I had Ebisu draft beer with my eel bowl. Its slightly bitter yet smooth finish made it a truly perfect pairing! 🍻

I put a thick, tender piece of eel on the rice, added a little wasabi, and took a bite. 😋 The soft texture, as if the eel melted the moment it hit my mouth, was just art. 💖 The sweet-salty house sauce soaks deep between the eel and the grains of rice, so the flavor gets richer the more you chew. 🤤 Grilled carefully in the traditional way, it has a charcoal aroma outside and stays moist inside, and I was happy the whole meal. 👍 It was the best Gangnam eel bowl, one that made me feel properly treated. 🍱

Is Manmok near Seolleung Station okay for dining solo?

Manmok has a quiet, refined atmosphere, so it's also great for relaxing over a meal alone. 👤 I think it would also suit office workers nearby who want a clean, filling stamina meal for lunch. 💼
