Jongno, Daegu BBQ with a 5,000-won soybean stew: Jangjak Saenggalbi
In short
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a fresh galbi (unmarinated beef rib) restaurant on Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu, a 247m walk from Jungangno Station Exit 1, and it was formerly known as Byeokdol Saenggalbi. On a late-night visit the writer ordered one 500g plate of jangjak saenggalbi for 58,000 won, bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) and a 5,000 won doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and a staff member grilled the meat from start to finish. Between the quality of the beef, the banchan spread and that cheap stew, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is an easy recommendation for value.

What kind of restaurant is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a fresh galbi restaurant at 38-1 Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu, just 247m from Jungangno Station Exit 1, spread across the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. Last night I was craving fresh galbi so badly that I searched around and landed on this place haha. It used to be called Byeokdol Saenggalbi (brick galbi) but changed its name to Jangjak (firewood) Saenggalbi, and apparently they're changing the sign soon too.

They were also running a review event and an app-alarm event, which was even better. A 5% discount is pretty significant, I think. Heh.

Fresh galbi, 500g for 58,000 won: how much meat do you get?
The jangjak saenggalbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is 500g for ₩58,000, which is fairly cheap, and the portion looks generous too. The Uiseong garlic fresh galbi looked really good too, but we went so late it seemed to be sold out.. So we just ordered a plate of jangjak saenggalbi.😎

The self-serve bar and banchan at Jangjak Saenggalbi
The self-serve bar has various side dishes and is neatly organized.

The basic banchan (side dishes) came out like this, and the presentation and lineup were really excellent. They cut through the greasiness of the meat, and you could keep eating them when you got a bit sick of the meat. The icy mu-saengchae (shredded radish salad) is genuinely delicious. Spicy and cool, it went so well with the meat.

Look at the color of this meat… it looks like you could just eat it raw haha. For ₩58,000 for 500g, with this quantity and quality, it's genuinely a strong recommendation. I could already taste it just from the color, before even eating it lol.

Does the staff grill the beef ribs for you from start to finish?
At Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, a staff member kindly grilled everything from start to finish and kept a close eye on the grilling, which immediately made me think the service was comfortable and good. It meant we could chat easily and just focus on eating, which was even better.

The meat quality is genuinely great. It's a shame it doesn't all come through in photos..

This is insane..lol🤯

Once the meat looks done, they put it up like this so it's ready to eat right away.👍👍 The meat quality is amazing and it's packed with juices. Since it's unmarinated fresh galbi, you really taste the flavor and juices properly, and with fat and lean meat evenly distributed, it was truly delicious. Fresh galbi also has protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12, so it's good for you too. The meat was soft, moist, and honestly highly recommended.. I was moved the moment I took a bite..lol
People often say fresh galbi gets greasy if you eat a lot, and that it's hard to grill well. But since they grilled it for us from start to finish and there were banchan and sauces to cut the greasiness, we could keep eating it deliciously till the end.

What to order with it: bibim naengmyeon and the 5,000-won doenjang jjigae
We also ordered bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), which was genuinely delicious. I like it when there's a lot of broth like that, and it came out exactly that way, which I liked. The distinctive aroma made it more tangy and it went well with the meat. They also have mul naengmyeon, ttagwijjim (steamed pork cheek), and gaesaebi-tang (crab and shrimp soup), which looked really good, but I was too full to order them.. They looked spicy and hot, like they'd be great with drinks. And even the prices are nice..

This doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) is ₩5,000 — you have to order it.. It's spicy and hearty, great with rice or as a drinking snack, and it's got plenty of meat, tofu and various other ingredients — genuinely delicious. I finished a whole bowl of rice with this jjigae in no time..lol Truly highly recommended.👍
Is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch worth it?
- Great value, generous portions, genuinely delicious meat
- Banchan lineup is a really good combination, unlike other places
- The doenjang jjigae is a total must-order
