Sokcho IC bakery café: reserve ahead for fresh potato bread, Bultan
In short
Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, right next to the Sokcho IC tollgate. The writer reserved ahead, picked up a freshly made 4-piece box of Bultan potato bread (₩10,000) and bought squid, red crab and dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) flavored Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy snack strips), then snacked on the jjondeugi one by one in jammed highway traffic back to Seoul. If you want your potato bread warm, reserve before visiting Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread.

Where is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store?
Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵 본점) is on Haksapyeong-gil, right next to the Sokcho IC tollgate, and it's open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM. Takeout and group visits are possible, and parking is free.
Gangwon-do means potatoes 🥔🥔🥔 My grandma's house is in Gangwon-do, so I ate my fill of foods made from hardy staple crops growing up, but whenever I'm back in Gangwon-do I still crave them and go looking. This time, of course, I ran straight over to buy potato bread.

Famous as a Sokcho bakery and Sokcho bakery hotspot, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread sits right beside the Sokcho IC tollgate, so it's wonderfully convenient. I've already used it twice and it's a proper favorite, so today I stopped by before our Sokcho trip even properly started.

What are the parking and the atmosphere like?
The parking lot is very big and easy to park in, so even beginners can park without trouble and head into the café.

The outside is decorated with bold paint and stands out from far away..! The inside is wood-toned, a totally different look from the exterior, and really charming, haha. The café space is big and the tables are spaced widely apart, so it's perfect as a relaxing break in the middle of a trip.

Menu and prices
Bultan Gamja Bread sells 4 pieces of Bultan (burnt-black) potato bread for ₩10,000 and 12 pieces of Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy dried-pollock-style snack sticks; chicken gangjeong, red crab and squid flavors) for ₩10,000. It doesn't only sell potato bread, it also carries the jjondeugi and a range of drinks, so it was a perfect quirky Sokcho café!
- Bultan potato bread, 4 pieces: ₩10,000
- Sokcho jjondeugi (chicken gangjeong, red crab, squid), 12 pieces: ₩10,000

Do you need to reserve to get freshly made potato bread?
The writer ordered one potato bread and 10 bundles of jjondeugi, and because I'd reserved ahead, I got the potato bread freshly made.

I love jjondeugi and usually pick one up whenever I'm at a supermarket, but the Sokcho jjondeugi catches your eye from the flavors alone. If it were potato-flavored jjondeugi.. or sweet potato jjondeugi, I'd go "hmm" and just pass, but squid 🦑🦑🦑 red crab 🦀🦀🦀🦀 chicken gangjeong 🐔🐔🐔 aren't you super curious about these three flavors..? So I picked the 10-bundle right away!

Bultan Gamja Bread only makes a small amount of potato bread each day, and the rest is frozen bread, so if you want it fluffy and warm, please be sure to reserve before you visit ✨✨ And with the Naver receipt event, you even get one potato bread free 🤤

What does Bultan potato bread taste like?
Bultan potato bread has fluffy potato inside a chewy black skin. It was so soft, sweet and mild that it felt like there was more to it than just plain potato.
There's a faint buttery aroma, each potato bread is quite big, and they're individually wrapped, so they'd be perfectly fine for a morning commute or as a kids' snack. It's bread-like, but the skin is so chewy that it felt like eating rice cake (tteok). It isn't very sweet, so both adults and kids should like it!!

Three Sokcho jjondeugi flavors as a snack on the drive home
The moment we got in the car, I tore open the Sokcho jjondeugi. Squid was my favorite, while my family said the red crab was good too and that the slightly sweet chicken gangjeong flavor was quirky but tasty.
It was fun to rip open one at a time during the trip, and on the way back to Seoul the highway was so jammed, but eating them one by one meant I never even noticed the boredom, haha.
