Sokcho bakery café: potato bread cheaper in store than online, Bultan

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. On a Gangwon trip the writer tried the free sample bread, then bought a 4-piece box of Bultan potato bread and squid-flavored jjondeugi (a chewy Korean snack stick). The bread was chewy outside with a soft potato filling that was not artificially sweet. Buying at the store tends to be cheaper than ordering online, so Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is worth a stop on any Sokcho trip.

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store: why buy in the store?

Buying at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵 본점) tends to be cheaper than ordering online, so if you're in Sokcho, I recommend stopping by in person! Potatoes and soft tofu (sundubu) are must-haves on any Gangwon trip, right? I finally got to visit Gangwon again after a long time and brought home potato bread 😊

What kind of bread is Bultan potato bread?

They say Bultan potato bread avoids artificial sweetness to bring out the real potato flavor, using cream cheese and butter for taste! A true potato bread that focuses on the potato, at this Sokcho bakery café favorite 🥔👍🏻👍🏻

The black color comes from squid ink, to capture the color of Sokcho, and the owner says they make and sell food that is healthy as well as tasty 🫶🏻

Introduction to the black Bultan potato bread

Why the potato bread is black, and how it's made

The black bread was made to recall the sooty roasted potatoes people used to bake in old hearths!! haha It's not actually a charred potato bread :)

Bultan potato bread is made fresh every day, with Gangwon potatoes washed and roasted each morning 👍🏻 Boiling or steaming is easier, but they say roasting gives the best natural sweetness. So they peel the roasted potatoes before they cool. Maybe that's why the potato filling inside is so soft and not artificially sweet, which made it even tastier 🥔💛

Grain powder coating and the sample bread

The outside is coated with ground grains such as black sesame, black beans and black rice! It looks good, and since they carefully select domestic grains, it tastes nutty too 👍🏻

At the main store, they cut up sample bread so you can taste before you buy 😆 Chewy outside, moist inside!!

How to reheat Bultan potato bread

Room-temperature bread takes 20 seconds in the microwave; frozen bread takes 30 seconds, then flip and heat 30 seconds more. The store's instructions are below.

How was the Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi?

The Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi at the main store wasn't too salty and had a strong squid aroma 👍🏻 Sokcho means squid again!! Squid is in season right now, so it tasted even better :)

The Sokcho jjondeugi comes in three flavors wearing Sokcho's colors! Red crab and squid, both Sokcho specialties, plus dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) flavor!! If you're wondering what Sokcho souvenir to buy, I highly recommend this bakery café favorite 💛
