Yongsan tteokbokki, 30-min wait for a sauce-coated combo: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and Korean street-snack restaurant on Hangang-daero 39-gil in Yongsan, Seoul. After waiting about 30 minutes, the writer ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. The sauce clung to the rice cakes, so even a self-confessed spice wimp kept reaching for more, and crispy fried snacks dunked deep in that sauce were the standout pairing. On days when tteokbokki alone is not enough and you want to try several Korean snacks at once, the Hyeonseoni Combo Set at Hyeonseonine is a safe choice.

Hyeonseonine in Yongsan: how long is the wait?
Today's story is about tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in spicy sauce) in Yongsan, hahaha! I heard there's a famous tteokbokki place in Yongsan, so I went!! It's Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점).

There was a wait the day I visited! I think we waited about 30 minutes!!! So many people, right? Well, with a popular place.. you just have to wait, I guess.
It seems you can also reserve through Catch Table! Oh, and they do delivery too!

Honestly, I don't eat tteokbokki all that often, but every once in a while I crave it like crazy hahaha. Especially those days when you want to dunk fritters in it and eat sundae (Korean blood sausage) alongside.... You know those days, right? Hahaha. This was exactly one of those days.

What to order at Hyeonseonine? When in doubt, the Hyeonseon combo set
At Hyeonseonine I ordered the Hyeonseon combo set (현선이콤보세트), which lets you eat a bit of everything!! If you're like me and can't be bothered picking dishes one by one, but want this and that, just get the set, I think hahaha.
At a snack bar, tteokbokki alone always feels a bit lacking... but ordering everything makes it way too much food... hahaha. So, the Hyeonseon combo set!!
How spicy and tasty is the tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine?
Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki is the style where the sauce clings to the rice cakes, so it was my kind of look from the start. I prefer sauce that sticks to the rice cakes over tteokbokki in watery broth, and this was exactly that. The rice cakes were chewy and well soaked in the sauce, so it was delicious!!
Also, I can't handle spice at all, so very spicy tteokbokki is a no for me T_T These days tteokbokki is so spicy that it's one bite, sip of water, one bite, sip of water hahaha, and I often can't tell whether I'm eating tteokbokki or drinking water... but Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki was the kind I kept reaching for.
Of course, everyone feels spice differently, so take this with a grain of salt!! Hahaha. I really can't eat spicy food....😂
Fritters dunked deep in the tteokbokki sauce
The fritters in the Hyeonseon combo set are best dunked in the tteokbokki sauce. Honestly, is there anyone who doesn't dip fritters in tteokbokki sauce...? Hahaha. Crispy fritters are tasty on their own, but dunked deep in the sauce they were really good T_T
Personally I always load fritters with lots of tteokbokki sauce, so I dunked them in really deep hahaha. Crispy fritters with sweet-and-spicy tteokbokki sauce... what is there to say. It's a combo that can't be bad hahaha.
Is the Hyeonseon combo set enough food?
Since the Hyeonseon combo set lets you eat several snacks together, you don't get tired of it. Tteokbokki, then a fritter, then something else, then back to tteokbokki hahaha. I guess that's why people order combo sets.
At first I worried, what if it's not enough...? But as I ate, it was more filling than I expected. Snack food is like that: while you're eating, it keeps going down, then when you finish you're suddenly stuffed hahaha. A moment ago I felt like I could eat one more tteokbokki, and then suddenly full.... Still, you can't leave tasty food behind, so I ate hard 😋
Craving Korean snack food in Yongsan? How is Hyeonseonine?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch seems like a good stop in Yongsan when you can't decide what to eat and want a simple snack meal. If tteokbokki alone isn't enough and you want a bit of everything, the Hyeonseon combo set is worth trying!! I was happy to eat a bit of everything at once too :)
Tteokbokki prices have gone up a lot lately, so ordering things separately adds up more than you'd think T_T That's why when there's a set menu, I look at the set first hahaha.
It's been a while since I properly ate tteokbokki with fritters too!! The diet.... starts tomorrow.... hahaha. I feel like I say "from tomorrow" every day, but that's just my imagination 😂
Anyway, if you're looking for a tteokbokki place in Yongsan, or you love Korean snack food, give Hyeonseonine a visit :) And if you want to eat a bit of everything like me, I recommend the Hyeonseon combo set!! Fritters dunked deep in the tteokbokki sauce are really good T_T Next time I'm in Yongsan, I think I'll be craving it again.
