Sum, a large café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi near Namhansanseong

I found this Gwangju café, Sum (카페 숨), while out for a drive near Namhansanseong ☕️ It's a big café with lots of seats and a calm, uncrowded feel! It was good for sitting down to work and also nice for just relaxing, so today I'm introducing Sum, which I discovered near Namhansanseong~~

Is parking easy at Sum?

Ample parking space in front of Sum
Exterior of the Sum building set back from the road

There's plenty of parking space in front of Sum, so I parked easily and went in 🚗 I found it on a drive near Namhansanseong! Maybe because the café sits further back from the road, there weren't a huge number of people?! Personally, I like a relaxed place like this more than somewhere packed these days, haha

Sum's seating and atmosphere by floor

Sum interior with lots of seats

Sum has a 1st and 2nd floor, plus one more building, so there are quite a lot of seats.

Sum 1st floor and outdoor terrace seating

You can pick up bread on the 1st floor and take it upstairs. The 1st floor also has an outdoor terrace, and the weather was cool and lovely, so almost everyone was sitting on the terrace~

Large beam projector space on Sum's 1st floor

There's also a space with a large beam projector on the 1st floor!

Seating area on Sum's 2nd floor
Sum 2nd floor interior with a view out the window

The 2nd floor looks like this~ There's no elevator inside! The view might actually be better on the 2nd floor? haha It'd be even prettier when the autumn leaves turn.

Calm annex space connected to Sum's 2nd floor

The annex is the best spot to work alone

From the 2nd floor you can walk over to the next building, which has a slightly calmer atmosphere. The music isn't loud there, so it's a good place to focus or work. If you're coming alone, I recommend this space!

Green rice field scenery around Sum

What's the view from Sum?

Around Sum you get a green view of rice fields and farmland 🌿 It's not a big "wow!" kind of view, but there's a comfort in scenery like this, haha. Looking at the green fields with a gentle breeze while sipping a coffee! Isn't that its own little bit of healing, lol

Field view and seats at Sum
Sum's spaces while looking for a seat

Big cafes like this are all about the space and the view, right?! So choosing a seat (?) secretly takes forever, lol. I wandered around going "where's best~~" for ages, finally settled on a spot, and then, time to go order!

The most popular bread at Sum was the salt bread (a buttery roll with a salted top). Bread and coffee are the default now, lol, you have to have them together. The salt bread was sold out that day, which shows how popular it is~ Sum's salt bread is slightly crispy outside and soft inside! For anyone choosing salt bread, take note~ :)

How much is the Americano at Sum?

The Americano at Sum is ₩6,500 ☕️ It's not cheap, but that's just how big cafes are, lol. Since I'd come all this way, I figured I'd settle in and chat for a long time, so I ordered bread and a few other things too, haha

Coffee and bread ordered at Sum

Cube cheese bread and red bean butter salt bread

My beloved salt bread ❤️ And I also ordered a cube-shaped cheese bread (?). The breads were in the ₩4,000–5,000 range.

The cheese bread is nutty and rich, like eating a fancy loaf of bread, haha. It went well with the Americano. And the red bean butter salt bread (앙버터소금빵), what can I even say~ crispy outside, moist inside, and delicious~

Coffee and bread enjoyed with an autumn field view

Eating bread and coffee while looking at the green autumn scenery is just pure healing, lol. This is why you come to a big café, right~ haha

Wide, relaxed view of Sum

Who is Sum near Namhansanseong good for?

Sum was a great place to relax in a wide, easygoing space! With such varied spaces and seats, it's also nice for a leisurely chat, haha. Best of all, it wasn't packed, so it was a truly healing Gwangju café. It's good for talking with friends while looking at the green view, and the parking lot is quite large so there's no parking stress. If you're driving near Namhansanseong or looking for a big café with a quiet mood, Sum is worth a visit.
