My boyfriend and I first tried Somunnan Gamjatang's main branch in Junggye near our place and loved it, so this time we visited the directly-run second branch, Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch.

The free side dishes: pickled onions, kkakdugi and fresh-cut kimchi

🥢 The basic side dishes are seriously delicious

The side dishes that came out first after ordering! Personally what stuck with me here were the side dishes served alongside. The combo of onion pickles + kkakdugi + fresh kimchi was genuinely delicious.

The gamjatang itself is tasty, but with side dishes this good too, you just keep eating even when full haha. Especially a piece of meat with fresh kimchi or onion pickles — you can't stop. Gamjatang restaurant near Sanggye Station, Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch.

Is a 36,000-won small gamjatang enough for two people?

🥘 Gamjatang for two, small size, 36,000 won

For our gamjatang meal near Sanggye Station, we ordered the small size for two. The portion was quite large from the start. Even with two of us eating, there was so much meat that we got fuller and fuller as we went. Passed the visual test the moment it arrived!!!

The gamjatang broth was rich, and with aged kimchi mixed in it went great with the meat. Gamjatang restaurant near Sanggye Station, living up to its name!!

There's really so much meat on the bones. The portion is huge. I was surprised at how many chunks were packed in there.

Bone meat picked apart and placed on a plate

Eating gamjatang always involves the patient work of picking meat off the bones, but I think it's worth it. Gamjatang restaurant near Sanggye Station, Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch.

Originally we planned to finish with fried rice after the gamjatang. But the moment we saw how it looked, we felt we had to eat it with rice, so this time we just had it with a bowl of steamed rice.

The aged kimchi was so good I kept picking it up along with the bone meat. I'd been saying for days I wanted meat, so my boyfriend gave me a lot of it.

Half-eaten pot of gamjatang

The gamjatang portion itself was so big that after the two of us finished, we had no room left for fried rice 😂 We were already way too full and had to give up on the fried rice we really wanted. Next time I should pace myself with the fried rice in mind from the start. Recommend this gamjatang place near Sanggye Station.

Of course, gamjatang has to be dipped in the sauce — that's the rule. My foreign boyfriend ate really well too. It actually makes me happy seeing him eat even more than me. Confirmed: a great gamjatang restaurant in Sanggye-dong!!!

Ball of dumpling dough served alongside the meal

Finishing the pot: tearing the sujebi dough in yourself

And this place has a special extra — they give you dumpling dough on the side. I thought the ball looked small, but once I actually tore it apart by hand, there was a surprising amount.

Being able to tear the dumpling dough in yourself adds another layer of fun to eating gamjatang haha. After picking out all the meat, you tear off bits of dough by hand and let it simmer into a thick, spicy, hearty broth. Watching this, I wonder if dumpling soup could be called Korean pasta? It was genuinely delicious.

My foreign boyfriend kept saying it was so good even after we got home, I lost count of how many times. If you're looking for a hearty gamjatang meal near Sanggye Station, I highly, highly recommend this place! Confirmed as a great gamjatang restaurant near Sanggye Station.
