Gwanggyo gyukatsu, 5-minute wait and a shared steak bowl: Gyuen-dang

In short

Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of Avenue France, 444 m from Exit 3 of Gwanggyo Jungang Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a second visit to Gyuen-dang, after a 5-minute wait via CatchTable, the writer shared one sirloin gyukatsu (19,000 won) and one steak rice bowl (19,000 won), searing the sirloin in Isigny butter melted on the hot stone plate before dipping it in wasabi and sauce. For two people at Gyuen-dang, one gyukatsu plus one rice bowl is the combination to order.

Full gyukatsu spread at Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch

Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch — a Gwanggyo restaurant I already visited with Booki 4 or 5 months ago! This is a gyukatsu (Japanese fried beef cutlet) spot I've now been to twice, the prices are pretty reasonable, and I want to recommend it as a date-course restaurant..!! These days it's hard to even find a gyukatsu place, but there's one right by Gwanggyo Jungang Station haha. So I end up visiting whenever I'm craving gyukatsu. Anyway, it's close to Gwanggyo Jungang Station too, so this is a gyukatsu place I want to recommend for Gwanggyo lunch :)

How long was the wait? 5 minutes with CatchTable

Visiting Gyuen-dang for Gwanggyo lunch! We got really lucky and only waited about 5 minutes. But apparently the group after us waited over 30 minutes…!! This place is popular so you need to wait — they use CatchTable, for reference :) On a hot day like this, even 5 minutes of waiting makes you sweat buckets… The inside isn't that big, more of a moderate size I'd say, which is why there's a wait.

The Gyuen-dang Gwanggyo menu and what we ordered

Here's the menu board of Gyuen-dang Gwanggyo Avenue France, a Gwanggyo lunch spot!! ㅎㅎ There's gyukatsu, rice bowls, omurice — it feels like a whole collection of Japanese dishes gathered in one place lol. We originally planned to each get our own gyukatsu, but ended up ordering one gyukatsu and one rice bowl instead. Nice that there were so many options to choose from.

  • Sirloin gyukatsu (₩19,000)
  • Steak rice bowl / Steki-donburi (₩19,000)
  • Zero Coke
Table card explaining how to eat gyukatsu

They even kindly wrote out how to eat gyukatsu haha

A Coke is essential… it was so hot on the weekend… just drinking Coke felt like it washed away the fatigue… way too tough to be out and about on a hot day.. ㅠㅠㅠ

Table set with steak rice bowl and sirloin gyukatsu

Why sirloin instead of tenderloin for the gyukatsu

Steak rice bowl and gyukatsu!! For the gyukatsu there was a tenderloin and a sirloin option, and since we like sirloin more than tenderloin, we deliberately ordered sirloin. For the rice bowl there was steak and tsukune (chicken meatball) options, but the steak one appealed to me more haha.

A plate of sirloin gyukatsu

The sirloin gyukatsu portion was actually pretty decent. Honestly gyukatsu itself isn't usually a big-portion dish, so I worried it might not be enough, but the amount was good~ haha

Isigny butter served at Gyuen-dang

The butter is Isigny butter too~!! Even the butter here is a good one… such a precious butter…

Isigny butter placed on the hot stone plate
Searing the gyukatsu on top of the melted butter
Sirloin gyukatsu cooking on the stone plate

Spreading Isigny butter on the hot stone plate and searing

First spread the Isigny butter, then sear the meat on top! One of the perks of gyukatsu is the fun of grilling the meat yourself :) If the flame goes out midway, just call the staff over. (It seemed to go out pretty quickly, actually..)

Side dishes served with the gyukatsu
Salad, broth soup and kimchi side dishes

Salad, broth soup, kimchi too~ The broth soup and salad seemed to be free refills.

Cross-section of the seared sirloin gyukatsu

A piece of sirloin gyukatsu picked up with chopsticks

I actually prefer sirloin over tenderloin because it has more chew and a bit more fat. For gyukatsu too, I think sirloin tastes better to me haha

Gyukatsu topped with wasabi and dipped in sauce

After searing it, topping it with wasabi and dipping it in the sauce — insanely good.

Steak rice bowl topped with mushrooms

How was the steak rice bowl?

The steak rice bowl also had a decent portion, plenty of steak, and mushrooms on top too — pairing it together with the gyukatsu is honestly such a great combo.

Raw egg on top of the steak rice bowl
Steak rice bowl mixed with raw egg
A spoonful of the rice bowl with steak

For two people: one gyukatsu plus one rice bowl

Mixing in the raw egg and eating it together with the steak — insanely good.. haha. I think I get why this is recommended as a Gwanggyo lunch spot. Honestly if it's two people, ordering your own gyukatsu each is fine too, but I'd recommend our way more — one gyukatsu, and one rice bowl or omurice, and share them! Because gyukatsu is delicious, but the other menu items are surprisingly good too..

It's close to Gwanggyo Jungang Station so it's easy to get to, and the gyukatsu is delicious, making Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch a perfect Gwanggyo lunch spot. Everyone, when you're on a Gwanggyo date, come try the gyukatsu here ><
