It arrived with a box and an info card.

The box is a calm gray. Honestly, if it hadn't been for the scent drifting through the box when I first got it, I wouldn't have known it was soap. The paper has a matte texture, and the whole design is understated. It reads more like a perfume box than a soap box.

Let's look at what's in Receptor Perfumed Seed Soap Ecru. You can see black flecks in the soap — that's red bean powder. It shows up as the second-to-last ingredient on the full ingredient list. That's also why the color has a walnut tint, and where the 'seed' in 'seed soap' comes from.

According to the brand's description, Ecru is a macadamia oil + red bean powder combination — one oil, one powder.

The first ingredient is sorbitol, the second is propylene glycol, and glycerin shows up in the middle too. All three are humectants that pull in moisture. This kind of formula is often called a glycerin soap, and it tends to be softer and more hydrating than a hard bar soap.

It's a line you can't see at the point of purchase — you only get to read it once you open the box. I wondered why they'd hide something like that, but thinking about it, it seems meant only for the person who receives it as a gift. The seed design on both sides looks like a seed splitting open, and you pull the seed-shaped soap out from inside.

The soap itself is wrapped in white inner paper with a label that says Receptor. Carefully unwrap that, and you find the soap wrapped in film. Open the box, unwrap the inner paper, then the soap — a three-step unboxing. That much care put into a single bar of soap is exactly why it makes such a good gift. A gift should be fun to unwrap.

Even while still wrapped in film, the scent seeps out really strongly.

It looks so pretty like this that I spent a good while deciding whether to unwrap it at all or just leave it as a display piece.

Shape and grip: a seed form with vertical grooves

Once I peeled off the film, it really did look like a seed. An oval shape like an almond or walnut kernel, with several deep vertical grooves running down it. Receptor is stamped into one side. The color is a deep walnut, and if you look closely, tiny black specks are packed in densely.

It has a really good grip. The grooves mean it's surprisingly hard to drop. It's not hard — slightly soft, with a bit of give when you squeeze it.

It looked so pretty and smelled so strong like this that I barely resisted the urge to leave it as decoration instead of using it.

How Ecru washes: lather and how long the scent lasts

I kept it in the bathroom and tried it out. Rather than big, rich lather, it comes up fine and light.

Since it's not made purely from fatty acid soap but includes cleansing agents as well, it produces soft, fine bubbles.

The feel is really nice and the cleansing power is quite good too. Thanks to it, I've been washing my hands more often lately.

But above all, the scent is really good. It's not a smell you'd normally get from soap. Rather than a light, refreshing soap scent, it's rich and heavy. Nutty and toasty with some sweetness too. It sits somewhere between a luxury perfume and a soap, and that in-between spot is exactly the appeal of this product.

The scent notes the brand lists for Ecru are: macadamia, walnut, peach, nutty, sweet, deep. Apparently the deep macadamia and walnut scent leads into a ripened sweetness, with a peach trail lingering subtly afterward. So the toasty part was macadamia and walnut, and the sweetness was peach! It was hiding behind the nuts, so I had no idea that sweetness was peach.

After washing, skin feels moist and the scent lingers on it for quite a while. It feels like you can take care of your scent with just this one bar, no perfume needed.

There are three soaps in the Receptor Perfumed Seed Soap line, and all of them follow the same structure: one oil plus one powder. The brand has given each one its own character too. Siena is daily, Ecru is scrub, Verdant is soft. That's why Ecru has red bean powder in it — of the three, it's the one in charge of smoothing texture.
