Hongdae rooftop sashimi restaurant with seafood ramen: Yeonnam Eobu
In short
Yeonnam Eobu (연남어부) is a raw fish restaurant on Donggyo-ro in Mapo, Seoul, near Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, where you pick your fish from the tanks on the 1st floor, pay, then go up to the floor you are directed to. Over a flounder set (dodari hansang) and seafood ramen with a friend, the writer found a table-filling spread, fresh sashimi with no fishy taste, and seafood piled so high it covered the noodles. For a raw fish restaurant in Hongdae with a good atmosphere, Yeonnam Eobu is worth recommending.

I have a friend who loves raw fish, so we decided to have sashimi together for the first time in ages! If we were going to do it, we wanted somewhere with a good vibe that's also trendy, and while searching I found Yeonnam Eobu (연남어부), a Hongdae raw fish restaurant that even serves dakseu-wu (candy-striped shrimp), so off we went haha.
Where is Yeonnam Eobu, and what are the hours and parking?
Yeonnam Eobu is at 220 Donggyo-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul (1st floor), near Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station. It is open daily 15:00–24:00 with last order at 23:00, and there is no parking.

The building looked really clean and nice :)

How do you order at Yeonnam Eobu?
At Yeonnam Eobu you choose your fish on the 1st floor, pay, and then go to the floor you are directed to. The instructions were posted at the entrance, and they seem to sell a wide range of dishes, so I was already excited! haha
When we got to the 1st floor, it was full of fresh seafood!

Since you pay for the fish on the 1st floor, you can see the sashimi and set meals on sale there. They were also selling mulhoe (chilled raw fish soup), a summer-only menu, and there were lots of fish to pick from: flounder, rockfish, sea bream, mullet, salmon, candy-striped shrimp and more. You can see the fish in the tanks yourself, so choosing was fun!
Yeonnam Eobu's 2nd-floor seating and 3rd-floor rooftop
We went up to the 2nd floor and the atmosphere was so good haha. It was still bright since it was early evening, but I got the feeling the lighting would be nice at night too~

I wanted a window seat, but the sun was strong there, so sadly I gave up. And the 3rd floor is a rooftop, which looked perfect for weather like we've been having lately!
What is on the Yeonnam Eobu menu?
You can check the menu on a tablet, and ordering was easy too! Besides the many kinds of seafood, there are plenty of sides: flatfish salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), seafood ramen, seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), shrimp tempura, squid tempura, half-and-half tempura, spicy crab stew, fish cutlet and more, so it was really hard to decide what to eat. We ordered the flounder set (dodari hansang), seafood ramen and drinks!
Yeonnam Eobu's flounder set: what comes with it and how it tastes
First came small dipping dishes for the chojang (spicy vinegar sauce) and soy sauce, plus a few simple snacks!

And then the flounder set made its entrance!!! Wow, it was so generous it filled the whole table.

The flounder set came loaded with seaweed soup, sweet potato fritters, salad, rice for making sushi, and lots of side dishes that go well with sashimi. Crazy look, wow.

The sides are great, but the moment I saw the sashimi I could tell how fresh it was!!

Time to dig into the sashimi quickly!! I usually love the fin part, and some pieces had a crunchy bite too! No fishy smell at all, just fresh and so tasty.

I especially made sushi with the sushi rice from the set, and the seasoning on the rice was amazing? With wasabi and soy sauce it was so good, I could cry. Wrapping it in leaves (ssam) was delicious too haha.

How is Yeonnam Eobu's seafood ramen?
The seafood ramen was so generous that the noodles were hidden under the seafood. We ordered it after finishing a fair amount of the flounder set, and honestly everything at Yeonnam Eobu is just generous, haha. The ramen was overwhelming the moment I saw it. The noodles were barely visible under the seafood, lol.

The noodles get soggy, so I went for them first and slurped them down haha. As seafood ramen should, it tasted full of the sea. The staff were kind and the food was really generous. The place has a nice atmosphere too, so if you're looking for a Hongdae sashimi restaurant, I think it's worth a visit :)
