Jongno 3-ga bakery recommendation: Munhwa Bakery, a place you'll keep coming back to once you've tried it

Munhwa Bakery, visited after a date in Jongno with my husband

Whenever my husband and I have a date in Jongno, there's one bakery we always end up stopping at. I bought bread here last time and it was so good that I just couldn't walk past it this time either! After our meal, I packed up a few breads to enjoy at home at a leisurely pace.

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours?

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the first floor, and it's open daily 11:00–20:00. Come out of Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station and walk a little way toward Changdeokgung, and you'll find it easily.

The small, old-fashioned exterior suits the Jongno alleys so well that it stands out even from a distance. It blends in with the vintage feel of the neighborhood, so it's a lovely spot for photos too!

A bakery that sells only same-day bread and donates the rest

Munhwa Bakery, a popular Ikseon-dong bakery, sells only bread made that day. Bread that doesn't sell gets passed on to a range of social welfare facilities, including meals for children in need, seniors living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal kitchens and homeless shelters. What a kind bakery~~♡

Once I learned that they don't just make delicious bread but also do good alongside it, I found myself wanting to cheer them on even more. I think it's probably this sincerity that has kept the shop loved for so long.

Is there a wait at Munhwa Bakery? A takeout-only shop that admits two groups at a time

Munhwa Bakery is takeout only, so the inside is rather small. Because of the limited space, only two groups can enter at a time, but when I visited on a weekday around 2 p.m., I got in right away with no wait.

Neatly arranged bread shelves at Munhwa Bakery

The shop is small but neatly arranged, and the variety of breads was bigger than I expected. About 16 kinds were on display, and every single one looked so tempting that I agonized for a long time.

Plain names, but every bread is delicious~♡-♡

Munhwa Bakery has breads with familiar, homey names, like mugwort rice cake bread (ssuktteok-ppang), cheese bread, garlic bread, coffee bread and onion bagel, yet the way they're displayed has a modern touch too. It's a place where you feel the warmth of an old-style bakery and trendy sensibility at the same time♡

Four breads I chose instead of the famous ones, and their prices

Garlic bread, coffee bread and onion bagel are Munhwa Bakery's famous items, but I tried them last time, so this time I decided to pick new ones. I filled my bag with black sesame bread, milk cream bread, white bean paste bread and walnut bread, and headed home.

How does the bread taste? Moist, soft and appealing

As I felt last time too, the breads at Munhwa Bakery are impressively moist, chewy and soft all around. There's no dryness at all, and the moistness lasts as you chew, so whichever bread you pick feels better than just decent.

White bean paste bread

The flower-shaped white bean paste bread (baek-angkeum-ppang) is pretty to look at, and inside it was generously filled with white bean paste. It isn't very sweet, so it's easy to enjoy, and thanks to its chewy yet moist texture, it was the first one I reached for.

Milk cream bread

The moment you bite into the milk cream bread, the milk aroma spreads richly. It's packed with cream without holding back, so you really get a soft, deep milk flavor. The bread itself is chewy, like rice cake, which makes it fun to eat.

Black sesame bread and walnut bread

The black sesame bread is covered in black sesame on the outside, so you can sense the nuttiness just by looking at it. One bite fills your mouth with deep sesame flavor, and the bread is moist, so I enjoyed it to the very end.

The walnut bread is coated in walnuts and sweet syrup, so you first notice a crisp texture, while the inside is moist and soft, giving you that crispy-outside, moist-inside charm!! It went really well with a cup of coffee.

The reason I keep going back to Munhwa Bakery whenever I'm in Jongno is that the taste is consistent. If you like bread that sticks to the basics over flashy looks, you'll probably be very satisfied. It's a good place for its same-day-only principle, its warm habit of sharing, and the taste of its moist, soft bread. If you're planning a Jongno date or an outing in Ikseon-dong, I recommend stopping by once.♡
