Hyehwa bar for spicy gopchang and rice cake hotpot: Hyehwahwa
In short
Hyehwahwa is a fusion Korean bar on the second floor of an alley building across from Hyehwa CGV in Jongno, Seoul. After seeing a play, the writer and her boyfriend took a window bar seat with a hanok view and ordered the signature straw-fire seared spicy tteok-gopdoritang (26,000 won) and top-grade chilled beef tartare with aged-kimchi egg gimbap (26,000 won) with soju. Between the smoky gopchang with chewy wheat rice cakes and the tartare gimbap plated on a mother-of-pearl chest, Hyehwahwa became her favorite bar in Hyehwa.

A Hyehwa bar with delicious fusion Korean small plates and great vibes — Hyehwahwa
I went on a date in Hyehwa with my boyfriend this time. We watched a play and then had a simple drink at a bar in Hyehwa. I visited because the food photos looked great on Instagram, but the taste was even better than expected — here's my recommendation review of Hyehwahwa.
Where is Hyehwahwa, and what are its hours?

This Hyehwa bar is in the alley across from Hyehwa CGV. Since straw-fire direct grilling is the main draw, the interior felt distinctly Korean and atmospheric right from the entrance.

You order via QR code, and the menu above is current as of September 4, 2026. We ordered mostly the signature dishes: the straw-fire seared spicy tteokgopdoritang, the top-grade chilled beef tartare and aged-kimchi egg kimbap, and of course, soju.

Window bar seats with a hanok view, plus the free tofu and white kimchi
Hyehwahwa has plenty of bar and table seating. It was too busy to get a photo, but there were lots of spacious seats! I wanted to have a drink while looking at the hanok view, so I sat at the window-side bar table haha.
The complimentary side dish is tofu kimchi, but it's made with white kimchi (baek-kimchi), so I was like, huh?? and tried it — the nutty sesame oil, white kimchi, and tofu went really well together and it was delicious haha.
Straw-fire seared spicy tteok-gopdoritang, 26,000 won
Hyehwahwa's signature straw-fire seared spicy tteokgopdoritang (rice cake and gopchang stew) is ₩26,000. Chicken thigh meat and pork gopchang (intestines) are seared over straw fire and served together.

The portion of gopchang and chicken thigh meat was seriously huge.

Since it's seared over straw fire, it has that smoky char flavor, and best of all it was so soft and chewy that it was delicious! We have a favorite famous gopchang stew place we love, and this was even better than that... I'm officially calling this a real gopdoritang spot.
And the rice cake is made of wheat, so it's soft and nutty — even better than the #1-ranked tteokdoritang from that famous show. Seriously, why is this so good, I want to eat it again already.
Beef tartare with aged-kimchi egg gimbap, 26,000 won
The top-grade chilled beef tartare with aged-kimchi egg kimbap (묵은지 계란김밥) is ₩26,000, and it's served beautifully plated inside a mother-of-pearl lacquer box (jagaejang).

This beef tartare aged-kimchi egg kimbap was seriously delicious too. It comes beautifully plated in the mother-of-pearl box, and when you put the tartare on top of the nutty aged-kimchi egg kimbap, it's the kind of flavor that makes you clap involuntarily... a true small-plates favorite 👏 The food was so good and generous that we kept ordering more drinks, and it ended in a full-on drunk ending.
Why Hyehwahwa works for a date night in Hyehwa
I went to Hyehwahwa, famous as a Hyehwa bar, and it's become my favorite spot in Hyehwa — nailing both the food and the vibe. If you're looking for a great restaurant-bar in Hyehwa, I genuinely recommend it.
