Jongno 3-ga bakery on a stroller walk with a 16-month-old: Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul, that sells bread baked the same day. On a stroller walk from Anguk to Euljiro 3-ga with a 16-month-old, the writer stopped at Munhwa Bakery for milk cream bread, garlic bread and chestnut bread, then turned the leftover chestnut bread into a tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) burger the next morning. With stroller access and dense, well-filled loaves, Munhwa Bakery is an easy stop to add to a day out with a baby.

Come check out Munhwa Bakery, one of Seoul's top 3 bakeries and a Jongno 3-ga favorite. I met it on an outing with my baby that started in Anguk and ended in Euljiro 3-ga. A fun date with my 16-month-old, who's already figured out what good bread tastes like.

From Anguk to Euljiro 3-ga: our first Jongno outing with the baby

My son's first greeting to Anguk, Insadong, and Jongno. Walking through some of my favorite Seoul neighborhoods with my baby made it hot but happy work ♥ We had lattes at a café with a nice view in Anguk, looked at some art, ate a bowl of gomtang (beef bone soup) in Insadong, and by the time we'd walked all that, we'd arrived at Jongno 3-ga.

Streets I always used to walk alone — some days with my spouse now, and other days with our baby.

We also stopped by Munhwa Bakery, famous as a Jongno 3-ga favorite. Starting from Anguk and walking to Euljiro 3-ga takes you right through Jongno 3-ga, and passing through here brought back a memory of picking out couple rings with my spouse one winter.

What kind of bakery is Munhwa Bakery?

Munhwa Bakery has been open for over 3 years now. Every loaf has that dense, packed-full feeling. It bakes fresh daily and donates any leftover bread to people in need — that kind of good-hearted spirit and warmth fills the small space, making it a genuinely welcoming bakery.

The street itself is such a pretty neighborhood, I love coming here every time. My heart keeps going back and forth — between wanting to live in a renovated old villa and being drawn to a concrete apartment.

Is it okay to bring a 16-month-old and a stroller?

Munhwa Bakery allows babies and stroller access, so it wasn't hard to stop by with my 16-month-old. This was our first Jongno outing together at 16 months, and pushing a stroller around while taking him everywhere — I never imagined a day like this would come for me. He's at the age where he recognizes the shape and smell of good bread now, so seeing the loaves in the display case, he beamed with excitement!

Milk cream bread — the baby's reward dessert

The bread I picked out for the baby at Munhwa Bakery was milk cream bread. A little reward dessert for putting up with the heat alongside mom. My baby had already spotted the bread and was whining to get it right away. It's a chewy bread style packed with sweet, savory, rich milk cream. Even I thought it was seriously delicious. He munched on this happily all the way to Euljiro 3-ga.

Garlic bread — a must for the adults

Of course, garlic bread is for us adults. I have a real soft spot for garlic bread soaked through with garlic sauce — I fell for it once at Mandong Bakery in Yeonnam-dong, but the garlic bread here at Munhwa Bakery, a Jongno 3-ga favorite, is just as good. If you go to Munhwa Bakery, one of Seoul's top 3 bakeries, garlic bread is a must-pick.

Chestnut bread — chewy texture

The unspoken rule for moms is sliced bread, so I went with the chestnut sliced bread. It looked like a hearty, dense loaf so I got curious and picked it up, and the texture was so wonderfully chewy. How do you even make a dough that produces a texture like this? As someone who bakes as a hobby, I've tried making sliced bread several times myself and always failed — this is one of those loaves.

The next morning: a tteokgalbi burger made with the chestnut bread

The next morning, I made a burger with the leftover chestnut bread from Munhwa Bakery — a tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) patty, lettuce, and plenty of mayonnaise. The chestnuts gave it a nice crunch, and since the bread itself is so tasty, the whole thing was even better.

After today's Jongno date with my baby, I already want to go back. ♥ Wishing everyone happy parenting days.
