Gangneung bibimbap restaurant in Gangdong-myeon: ₩50,000 cockle set

Hello! It's Foodie Tam here. One dish you just can't skip on a Gangneung trip is cockle bibimbap, right? Since I'd made it all the way to Gangneung, I figured I had to eat cockle bibimbap before leaving, so I visited Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap.

I was looking for a Gangneung cockle bibimbap spot that's a bit quieter than the ones near the famous tourist areas but still lets you eat a generous meal — and that's how I found this place! Even the banchan were properly done, so I left having had a really satisfying spread.

Yeonhwa Maeul is in Gangdong-myeon, a bit outside downtown Gangneung! At first I wondered what would even be around there, but the wide-open view in front of the restaurant made it feel exactly like a proper Gangneung trip, haha.

Best of all, there's parking space right in front of the restaurant, so it was easy to visit by car haha. At popular Gangneung restaurants, parking alone can wear you out before you've even eaten... so it was nice not to have that worry here!!!

Inside the restaurant: a wide hall that fits families and groups

Walking into Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap, the inside was bigger than expected!! There were a lot of families dining, plus seating for larger groups, so it seemed like a solid choice for a Gangneung family trip or a group meal.

It wasn't a flashy, aesthetic kind of spot — more of a local restaurant feel where you sit down comfortably and eat a hearty full spread. And honestly, places like that tend to be the real deal, haha.

How much food does the ₩50,000 cockle bibimbap actually bring?

We ordered the ₩50,000 cockle bibimbap set at Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap! It comes with cockle bibimbap, banchan, and seaweed soup.

Honestly, when ordering I did wonder how much food ₩50,000 would actually get you... but the second the food arrived, that thought disappeared completely.

And the banchan here are genuinely delicious too. Each one was good enough that my chopsticks kept wandering back to them in between bites of bibimbap. I thought only the main dish would be great, but the banchan were pulling their weight too... especially the steamed egg, which was seriously savory-salty and so good.

The size of the tray alone has serious presence, right? A huge bowl of cockle bibimbap sits in the middle of the table, surrounded by banchan filling out the whole spread. When I tried to take a photo from above, the plate was so big it barely fit in the frame, haha. True to a proper Gangneung cockle bibimbap restaurant, the cockles were loaded on generously... a setup that's great for scooping rice and cockles together!!

How did the cockles taste — texture and seasoning

The cockle meat was plump and springy, with a satisfying chew. You could fully taste that distinct cockle texture, which made it even better.

Cockle bibimbap can sometimes be tasty for the first few bites but get overwhelming fast if the seasoning is too strong — but mixed with the rice here, it just kept going down endlessly.

Given the size, I wondered if we could finish it all... but that kind of worry turns out to be unnecessary in front of delicious food. Completely demolished.

Finishing the meal with lotus leaf tea

Before heading out after the meal, lotus leaf tea! Just as the name suggests, it's a tea made by drying lotus leaves and steeping them in hot water.

Rather than being strong or bitter like green tea, it's more nutty with a gentle, grassy aroma! Finishing with a warm cup of lotus leaf tea left everything feeling clean and settled.

Is Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap worth it in Gangneung?

A place where you get to enjoy bibimbap generously loaded with cockles alongside genuinely tasty banchan! What I liked most was that it's not just the main dish that's good — the banchan are delicious too.
