Deer antler pills as a Chuseok gift for in-laws: Handong Hyoryeokhwan

In short

Handong Hyoryeokhwan is a deer antler pill (nogyonghwan) made by Handong Deer Antler Research Institute, blending New Zealand deer antler with 18 traditional ingredients including agarwood, deer horn and brewer's yeast. Bought as a Chuseok gift for the writer's parents-in-law, Handong Hyoryeokhwan came in the basic shopping bag rather than the premium bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) package, and the packaging alone still looked clean enough to hand over as a gift. If the same holiday health gifts come up every year, deer antler pills are a solid alternative.

Handong Deer Antler Research Institute Hyoryeokhwan Chuseok gift set

Chuseok is really coming up fast. Whenever the holidays roll around, one of the things I quietly stress about is gifts for my parents. Every year I spend ages agonizing over what to get my in-laws and my own parents. Since I end up preparing similar things each time, my ideas are starting to run a bit dry haha.

So this time I went looking for something a bit more practical that my parents could easily take, and I came across a product I wanted to introduce — Handong Deer Antler Research Institute's Hyoryeokhwan.

Why Handong Hyoryeokhwan became this year's Chuseok gift for my in-laws

Handong Deer Antler Research Institute is apparently a 40-year-old deer antler research institute. They make Hyoryeokhwan using their own proprietary 5-time kneading method.

For this Chuseok they also had a premium bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) package ready, which comes wrapped in a traditional cloth along with a dedicated shopping bag. I thought it would feel quite thoughtful for a visit to my in-laws or as a holiday gift for parents 🤍

Why I skipped the premium bojagi package

That said, I didn't go with the bojagi package this time. My in-laws tend to prefer practical, clean presentation over flashy wrapping, so I skipped the cloth wrapping for this gift haha.

On the other hand, my own mom loves gifts that are wrapped up nicely and prettily, so bojagi wrapping is basically a must for her gifts lol. Since each parent has such different tastes, picking a gift really ends up being about reading their preferences.

Even without the bojagi wrapping, the shopping bag itself felt clean and premium enough on its own, no extra wrapping needed to make it gift-ready.

What's inside: 18 traditional ingredients in Hyoryeokhwan

I'm pretty into health foods normally and take all sorts of things. Personally, I especially like products in pill form.

Individually packaged Hyoryeokhwan pills

After trying various pill products, what I've noticed is that they're convenient — no extra prep needed, easy to just take. So this time I looked a bit more carefully at the ingredients in Handong Hyoryeokhwan too.

Information on Hyoryeokhwan's 18 traditional ingredients

Handong Hyoryeokhwan blends a total of 18 traditional ingredients. It uses New Zealand deer antler along with agarwood, deer horn, brewer's yeast, and more.

Honestly, I check ingredients when picking health foods for myself too, but for a gift to my parents I find myself double-checking even more carefully. If you've been looking for something a bit different from the usual holiday health gift, a deer antler pill product like this could be one option.

Made without artificial preservatives, using honey

One thing I care about when choosing health foods is what ingredients are used and how it's made. Handong Hyoryeokhwan is made without artificial preservatives, forming the pills using the ingredients themselves along with honey.

I usually check the ingredient label when buying food or health products, so this kind of detail naturally caught my eye. I've eaten various health foods since childhood, and quite a few of the first ones I ever tried were in pill form too, so it's a familiar format for me personally. If you're trying pills for the first time, I'd suggest checking the recommended intake and ingredients first and adjusting to what suits you.

Made at Handong's own HACCP-certified factory

Something I personally paid attention to while researching Handong Deer Antler Research Institute was the manufacturing process. Apparently the entire process — from ingredient intake through drying, pill-forming, and individual packaging — is done one-stop at their own HACCP-certified factory.

Since it's a product taken with health in mind, what ingredients go in matters, but so does where and how it's made, right? Since this was for my parents, I found myself scrutinizing this manufacturing information more closely than usual.

Are deer antler pills a good holiday health gift?

While choosing this Chuseok gift, instead of just looking at price or packaging, I found myself checking things one by one — how convenient it'd be for my parents to actually take, what ingredients go in, and how it's manufactured.

Looking at all of that, I felt good about going with Handong Deer Antler Research Institute's Hyoryeokhwan this time. Most of all, since I've been giving similar holiday gifts every year, I wanted to try something a little different this time around.

If you've been wondering "what do I give this time?" every holiday like me, a deer antler pill product like this might be worth considering.

I'm planning to give this directly to my in-laws as a gift this Chuseok. My mother-in-law mentioned lately that she feels more worn out than before, so I wanted to prepare something more health-focused this time. I hope that if she takes it consistently, it helps her have even a little more energy in her daily life haha. If you've been thinking about a health gift for your parents this coming Chuseok, take a look at Handong Deer Antler Research Institute's Hyoryeokhwan too. :)
