Hongdae Korean beef BBQ à la carte with corn salad sauce: Gogi Salon
In short
Gogi Salon is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Dongyo-dong, Mapo-gu, between Hongik University Station and Yeonnam-dong in Seoul. Instead of a set, the writer ordered à la carte: 1 serving of beef kkotsal (well-marbled 'flower' cut), 2 servings of rib finger meat and chadol doenjang sulbap (brisket soybean-paste stew with rice), with staff grilling the beef at the table. Gogi Salon's corn-flavored salad sauce and banchan such as pickled chili peppers and spicy marinated crab also stood out. Gogi Salon is a recommended Hongdae spot for days when you're craving beef.

The name alone is gorgeous… Gogi Salon~ Gogi Salon~? Hahaha.

It's located in the Dongyo-dong area between Hongik Univ. Station and Yeonnam-dong, and it wasn't as hard to find as I expected. I heard reservations weren't necessary so I just went, but of course, since it's popular, the place was packed after 6:30. They said a wait can happen, so I'd recommend going early or booking ahead!
Storefront

It was so hot I really needed to get inside fast. The moment I spotted the Gogi Salon sign, it felt like finding an oasis.
Interior
Oops wait — moving on. The pig anatomy illustration inside was striking haha… sorry, piggy… T_T The interior was clean, good for gatherings, dates, or work dinners! Looked like the table behind us was a work dinner haha.
Sitting down in a nice cool spot with the AC blasting — this is heaven…
Menu and what we ordered

If you don't feel like thinking too hard, the set menu is perfect! There also seems to be a separate lunch menu — worth noting~!

I was craving beef more than the king galbi, so I decided to skip the set and order à la carte instead.
- Flower short rib (꽃살) — 1 serving
- Rib finger meat (늑간살) — 2 servings
- Chadol doenjang sulbap (차돌된장술밥)
Both cuts are from the rib area, but they feel completely different. The flower short rib has gorgeous marbling and melts in your mouth, while the rib finger meat is chewier with more bite.

What about the banchan?
The banchan (side dishes) here are the real MVP~! I really wanted the recipe for that salad sauce.. it's refreshing but tastes like corn, which totally caught me off guard! Himmel and I agreed we'd never had a salad sauce like this before and ate it up happily. I wanted to learn how to make it at home..

Pickled peppers and spicy marinated crab (양념게장) showed up too! Pickled peppers, my love~~ The seasoned lettuce salad was also great! And then… even the marinated crab! This place is a banchan powerhouse~

This is a proper old-school BBQ spot. Fresh wasabi, salt, and seed mustard — the full lineup!

Gogi Salon grills the meat for you
Another great thing about Gogi Salon — staff grill the meat for you. They heat the grill plate to the right temperature and oil it with beef fat trimmings.

Here comes the meat~~~~ That exciting marbling… a mouthwatering sight!!! Seeing the beef, my heat-exhausted body just… perked right up…
The flower short rib and rib finger meat go on the grill.. the sound of meat hitting the pan is basically ASMR that boosts your happiness levels!

Since they grill it for you, all I had to do was watch the meat cook to perfection — so nice.. cook up nice, meat~~

Wait, the side potatoes are so cute. How are they that small?… Underdeveloped, maybe..? Himmel thought they were garlic haha.. that big of garlic?? I cracked up!

The meat, cooking beautifully~~~ mouth watering, watering~~~ the smell and sound of beef grilling is a real sensory assault, seriously~

How did the flower short rib and rib finger meat taste?
Before long, the meat was fully cooked.. as soon as the staff placed it on the eating plate, chopsticks went straight in!!!
Sauce trio, ready!
Meat really needs fresh wasabi on top for the flavor to shine. Chew-boop! Wrapping meat topped with fresh wasabi and seed mustard in lettuce makes for a super healthy bite~ The flower short rib truly melts in your mouth.. yep, that's beef for you T_T

When the grill plate starts to char in the middle, they pour on what's probably water, and the plate comes clean — it's like watching a magic show!!

Now it's the rib finger meat's turn~ I was happy there was still meat left.. flipping it nicely and grilling away!

The rib finger meat has a bit of a galbisal (short rib meat) feel to it, and it's delicious overall. Topped it with wasabi too, and wow~~~ so good it made me tear up TT

Finishing with chadol doenjang sulbap
Since we'd had noodles for lunch, we decided on the doenjang sulbap (doenjang rice with alcohol-steamed rice) instead, and it arrived~ Meat plus doenjang sulbap combo? Can't resist TT An unbeatable pairing!!!
Ahh.. the doenjang sulbap was genuinely delicious. A classic side dish done right. After thoroughly finishing off the carbs too, I was completely full!
Himmel and I walked out happily full and satisfied! If you're looking for a solid BBQ spot in Hongdae, I recommend Gogi Salon!
