What kind of rice cake shop is Hohobak in Hadan?
Hohobak (호호박) is a handmade rice cake shop in Hadan, Busan, specializing in pumpkin injeolmi castella (chewy rice cake coated in pumpkin castella powder). I tried it once and got totally hooked, and I've bought it several times now. If you go late the rice cakes are all gone, so I recommend going early or calling to reserve!!
The cakes come neatly packed in pretty boxes by size, so they're great for picnics, kids' snacks or return gifts. The owner makes everything in the shop with healthy, fresh ingredients, so the rice cake is really fresh, and with so much pumpkin in it, it's sweet and really tasty~ My child tried it once, said it was delicious and kept asking for more, so we've become regulars.

Hohobak, the pumpkin injeolmi castella specialist, is about a 2-3 minute walk from Exit 1 of Hadan Station, in the alley right next to Daiso. The cute little sign is adorable already.

Inside Hohobak and the box sizes
Hohobak is takeout only, so the inside is compact. The fridge held tasty sweet pumpkin milk, and on top of it were various pumpkin items and decorations on display.

Hohobak's packaging comes in three sizes, small, medium and large, so you can pick what you need. Great for gifts!

The display case held packed pumpkin injeolmi castella. ^^ The packaging is clean and pretty, and there are dedicated shopping bags too, so it looked perfect for gifts and return presents.
Hohobak price list and coffee

Hohobak also sells coffee for ₩1,500, which goes nicely with the rice cake~

Why should you reserve at Hohobak?
Hohobak opens at 8 a.m. every day and closes early once the ingredients run out. I heard the owner visits the produce market every dawn, selects the ingredients personally, and makes everything fresh in the shop, so I recommend reserving before you go.
Please reserve ahead!!!

Two large boxes from Hohobak: how much food is it?
I ordered two large boxes of Hohobak's pumpkin injeolmi castella!! One for eating at home and one as a gift~~
Being the large size, the amount is huge, the packing is careful, and plastic gloves are included~ I divided it into portions and put them in the freezer, and when I took one out before eating it turned soft and chewy again, which was perfect for my child's snacks!

Inside the box there's an introduction to the food and storage instructions, which I liked. It's the hottest time of year right now, so I recommend eating only what you'll finish and freezing the rest right away.

What does the pumpkin injeolmi castella taste like?
When I opened the box, there was fluffy, golden-yellow pumpkin injeolmi castella inside. I love this pumpkin powder, and the box was really full of it, so after finishing the rice cake I just kept scooping it up with a spoon. The softest of the soft!

They say it's made only with fresh natural ingredients and no artificial additives, and look at that yellow castella powder~~

The fine, soft castella powder is really delicious. The injeolmi, made the same day with Korean rice, has a wonderfully chewy texture.

Maybe because it uses fresh sweet pumpkin, the yellow castella powder isn't strongly sweet and you can taste the natural flavor of the pumpkin. Sugary, artificial sweetness gets tiring quickly, but Hohobak's injeolmi castella has a natural sweetness that doesn't, and it was really good.
Can Hohobak's injeolmi work as a breakfast substitute?
Hohobak's pumpkin injeolmi castella looked great as a meal replacement too. I really bought the large size, and the rice cake just kept coming out of the box, which shocked me! The portion is more generous than you'd expect.

Eating the injeolmi with a generous coating of fluffy castella powder is just amazing. I think it's perfect as a quick breakfast on a busy morning. I shared some with people around me and many came back saying how delicious it was, which made me so proud!! I love Hohobak, the handmade pumpkin rice cake shop, haha

How does Hohobak's injeolmi taste after freezing?
There was so much of Hadan's Hohobak injeolmi that I froze it in portions, and just taking one out in the morning and leaving it, wow~ it was soft like freshly bought rice cake!! The taste keeps coming back to mind, so I'll have to go buy more soon~~
