Hapjeong bossam and Namhae anchovy kalguksu at 5 p.m.: Pyeongidambaek

In short

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in bossam (boiled pork) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) on Yanghwa-ro 7-gil near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. A repeat visitor returned at 5 p.m., right after the 15:00–17:00 break time, to avoid the crowds and ordered the usual bossam suyuk and Namhae anchovy kalguksu. The moist pork belly suyuk, radish salad and refreshing anchovy broth were as good as ever. For a hearty, back-to-basics meal in Hapjeong, Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a place to recommend with confidence.

When is Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch least crowded?

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch (평이담백 뼈칼국수 본점) gets plenty of customers at lunch and dinner peaks, so this time I went at 5 p.m., right after the break time (15:00–17:00) ends. Whenever I want a hearty meal in Hapjeong, this is the place that naturally comes to mind.

It wasn't my first time. I've been here several times, but it's the kind of taste you start craving again after a while, so back I went. Thanks to the 5 p.m. timing, I started my meal in a relaxed atmosphere, and a little later I watched the tables fill up one by one and thought, good timing. It reminded me once more why this is a Hapjeong favorite that people keep loving.

What's the atmosphere like? Clean interior and a comfortable vibe

No matter how many times I visit, the restaurant always feels well kept. The interior is tidy with no fuss, and the tables are spaced just right, so there's nothing uncomfortable while you eat.

Solo diners, families and groups of friends all blend in naturally, so it's easy to come with anyone. The staff were quick and friendly, ordering went smoothly, and the food didn't take long, which I appreciated. The place gets busy during peak hours, so if you want a relaxed meal, coming right after break time is a good approach.

The usual order again today: bossam suyuk

Once again I chose, without any debate, the bossam suyuk (boiled pork slices) and the Namhae anchovy kalguksu. I've been many times, but this combination satisfies me every time, so I naturally order it again.

The suyuk is made from pork belly, boiled tender, and it stays wonderfully moist. It pairs really well with the muscaenggichae (seasoned radish salad) served alongside. The sweet-and-sour radish brings out the flavor of the mild meat and cuts the richness. The pork is clean with no gamey smell and holds just the right amount of juice, so every slice was satisfying. What I like most is that the taste stays the same no matter how often I eat it.

How does the Namhae anchovy kalguksu broth taste?

The big draw of the Namhae anchovy kalguksu here is the broth, made with a generous amount of anchovies from Namhae. From the first spoonful you get a deep, rich savoriness, and because the broth is refreshing without being harsh, you can enjoy it to the end without it feeling heavy.

The noodles had a nice chewiness too and went well with the broth. Following the suyuk with a few sips of warm broth makes the whole meal feel more complete.

The combo that brings me back: suyuk and anchovy kalguksu

Each dish is great on its own, but the place really shines when you have the bossam suyuk and the anchovy kalguksu together. Put some radish salad on a piece of mild pork, then sip the warm kalguksu broth, and your mouth feels clean and refreshed.

That's why you don't get tired of the meal even at the end. The consistency of the taste on every visit is another big plus. It's not a place that was good just once; it's satisfying however many times you go, and that builds trust. So it's one of the first places I recommend to friends who want a hearty meal in Hapjeong.

A meal you can count on in Hapjeong

If you like food that sticks to the basics rather than flashy menus, you'll probably be very happy here. The carefully boiled bossam suyuk and the deeply flavored anchovy kalguksu never let me down, whenever I ate them.

Overall verdict

Leaving after another satisfying meal, I was already thinking about my next visit. Going at 5 p.m. to avoid the peak let me eat more leisurely, and watching the restaurant quickly fill with customers a little later made me feel again why it's so popular.

If you're looking for a no-fail meal in Hapjeong, I'd recommend this place. If you like mild suyuk, definitely order the bossam too. Paired with the deep, refreshing anchovy kalguksu, it was highly satisfying, and the biggest strength is the unchanging taste on every revisit. Whenever I'm in Hapjeong, I think it will keep coming to mind as a dependable Hapjeong favorite.
