Seongsu taiyaki café: 3 salted taiyaki and bitter coffee at Childish
In short
Childish is a salted-bread taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry) café on the second floor of 114 Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The writer came to Childish for bingsu (Korean shaved ice), but bingsu sales had been suspended, so the order switched to salted taiyaki (₩4,500), pizza salted taiyaki (₩5,700) and mammoth chewy salted taiyaki (₩7,800), plus 2 kinds of salt bread and 4 coffees; the chewy salt bread and bitter coffee stood out. A café that sells taiyaki. How curious!
This is not the taiyaki look I know!

Where is Childish, the taiyaki café in Seongsu?
Childish (차일디쉬) is a taiyaki café on the second floor of the building at 114 Yeonmujang-gil in Seongsu. The weather had turned cool, perfect for strolling and shopping.

I figured this nice weather would be over in a blink, so I went out to Seongsu to enjoy it while it lasted. I'd heard there was a café selling taiyaki, and that the taiyaki is not just any taiyaki, so that's how I ended up at Childish.

Childish is on the second floor.
Is this a place where I can feel a little piece of my childhood?
Full of expectations, I head for the entrance. You can already see taiyaki on the door. Let's goooo!

The breads are right there as soon as you walk in. I grab a seat first and look over the different breads.

Childish salt bread menu and prices
Childish is said to be known not only for taiyaki but also for making taiyaki out of salt bread (soft rolls with a salted, buttery crust). There were three or four kinds of salt bread, including egg mayo, jambon-beurre (ham and butter) and anbutter (red bean and butter).

The original salt bread we all know is also ₩2,500!

This is the mini salt bread. It was about two fingers long, a size you'd share in two bites rather than one. Mini salt bread can be bought in sets of 3 or more, at ₩900 each.
Taiyaki key rings and goods at Childish
There are cute models too~

And a taiyaki key ring, haha. Maybe because it's known as a Seongsu taiyaki spot, Childish sells goods, and the key ring is a taiyaki, haha. Such a cute fish shape, right~~~
There was also a Wi-Fi notice in the shop.

Can you get bingsu at Childish?
On the day I visited (mid-October), Childish wasn't selling bingsu. The weather was just before turning cold and we came here for bingsu, but, dun dun! They said bingsu isn't being sold right now. Ugh... then please take down the listing... I was sad. I wanted mango bingsu and ube (purple yam) flavor after so long, but nothing to be done!

Three salted taiyaki and salt bread instead of bingsu
With the bingsu plan ruined, what to eat? Since Childish is famous for Seongsu taiyaki, we changed course and decided to try the taiyaki, one of each kind.
- TOP 1. Salted taiyaki ₩4,500
- Pizza salted taiyaki ₩5,700
- BEST Mammoth chewy salted taiyaki ₩7,800
- Egg mayo salt bread ₩5,500 (the last one left)
- Jambon-beurre salt bread ₩7,500 (the last one left)
So we ordered the three taiyaki in a row~ plus the egg mayo and jambon-beurre salt breads, which had one piece each left.

They also sell plain, simple taiyaki with no filling, regular taiyaki at ₩1,000 each. Buy 4, get 1 free!
Hey, this cutie is the winking boy we saw in the window outside! I bet it's the owner's childhood self.
Childish drink menu and prices
Besides bread, of course they sell drinks. We ordered these four.
- Fire-play cream coffee ₩6,900
- Milky cream latte ₩5,900
- Vanilla latte ₩5,500
- Iced americano ₩4,500
I said I wanted the vanilla latte hot, but it came iced... Still, it was a rather warm day, so we just drank it!

What is the atmosphere like at Childish in Seongsu?
Childish is filled with taiyaki props, paintings and mismatched tables, so it's really fun to look around. We'd put in several orders and were told to take our time, so I wandered about. Is that a Basquiat? It has that kind of feel-
The cute taiyaki I saw on the key ring seems to be what you see when they box up your order, haha. Water, napkins and wet wipes are self-serve~
Near the restroom there were charming little things everywhere. I even spotted a painting that's totally my style-

Another cute taiyaki, haha

The Christmas tree ornaments are taiyaki, haha.

The tables are all different too. At Childish, the taiyaki café in Seongsu, picking the table you like is part of the fun.

There's fun in looking around everywhere. There's so much stuff that you lose track of time, haha.
I scouted the return station ahead of time. Oh~ so I can leave my tray here when I go!
After looking around, I sat down. The taiyaki cushion next to me! Even the cushion is a taiyaki! The owner is serious about taiyaki, haha.
Honest review of Childish salt bread and coffee
Our order is here! A few of these stood out, so I filmed them~
These are the salt breads! The regular and the mini. The size difference is obvious, right? hahaha

These are the egg mayo salt bread and the jambon-beurre salt bread. Personally, the egg mayo suited my taste better.
Iced americano and milky cream latte
As expected, on a hot day an iced americano goes down almost in one gulp. They filled it with ice, so I sipped carefully to avoid spilling!
This is the milky cream latte. From the name I expected something smooth, but the coffee was really bitter, so I think it's good for people who like bitter coffee.

Bul-jangnan ('playing with fire') cream coffee
This is the fire-play cream coffee I'd seen in so many review photos. Oh~ it looks just like the pictures. True to the name, a marshmallow is cutely torched and placed on top. The coffee is bittersweet and the marshmallow is sweet~ Childish seems to be a place that prefers bitter coffee.
How chewy is Childish salt bread?
Childish salt bread is so chewy that even when you cut it in half, it stays connected in the middle. I wanted to show you the texture, so I took photos. I tore it right down the middle and it didn't come apart, it stayed stretched like that. If you love salt bread that's beyond chewy, super chewy, run over here!

What does Childish salted taiyaki taste like?
The main dessert is here!!!
Shall we try the hugely famous taiyaki at Childish, the Seongsu taiyaki café? If you're wondering what salted taiyaki is, the video should help.
Childish is said to make all its bakery items in the shop. All the salt breads are low-gluten, made with rice flour and 100% milk-fat unsalted butter. They're made without additives, so they say you can freeze them and reheat in an air fryer or oven and they're still good. If you're curious about salted taiyaki, taking some to go sounds like a good idea.

The mammoth chewy salted taiyaki has rice cake and mugwort rice cake in the middle. If you like mugwort rice cake, you'll definitely love it!
The pizza salted taiyaki is a novelty taste if you're curious how pizza and salted taiyaki work together.
Is there parking at Childish?
There's no parking at Childish, the taiyaki café in Seongsu, so use a nearby public lot, and I recommend wandering around Yeonmujang-gil. We're stuffed, so shall we start our stroll along Seongsu's Yeonmujang-gil~?!
