In short

Oneuldo Utja Chowol (오늘도웃자 초월) is a Korean restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. It specializes in kimchi jjigae and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork) made with aged kimchi and fresh domestic pork. Stopping in on the way to an errand in Gonjiam, a couple ordered duruchigi for 2, two sotbap (rice cooked in a stone pot) and a jumbo rolled omelet. I had errands near Gonjiam and was craving warm, tasty Korean food. While searching, I found a place making kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi with aged kimchi and domestic fresh pork, so off we went. My husband and I love duruchigi, and this Chowol Station-area spot was close by, so we walked in full of expectations.

We came a bit after lunchtime, an awkward hour, yet the restaurant was quite full and guests kept coming in while we ate. The moment we walked in, we spotted the sotbap machines hissing away as they cooked rice, which was a happy sight. The interior is tidy and clean, so it felt comfortable the whole time. A staff member even came over first and kindly brought baby spoons, which really touched me. There's also a self-serve seaweed soup corner and a rice refill system, so it's very convenient for customers.

How were the duruchigi for 2, two sotbap and jumbo egg roll?

We ordered duruchigi for 2, two sotbap and a jumbo egg roll. Each dish had such a distinct charm that I'll walk you through them one by one.

Duruchigi: spicy-sweet with deep savory flavor

The duruchigi was packed with aged kimchi, onion and 100% domestic fresh pork, and you simmer it down until it sizzles, so the savory depth really bursts out. The deep, tangy flavor of well-fermented sour kimchi blended wonderfully with the richness of the pork, and the fresh pork was tender, chewy and soft with no gamey smell, making me marvel with every bite. The seasoning isn't just sharply spicy; it's a deep heat that comes from the ingredients themselves, so my chopsticks kept going back. The portion was also so generous that it never seemed to shrink no matter how much we ate.

Glossy sotbap made with Suhyangmi rice

Sticky, nutty perfection: Suhyangmi sotbap and nurungji

The sotbap was truly a stroke of genius. Maybe because it's made with premium Suhyangmi rice, the grains were glossy and sticky, sweet and delicious even eaten plain. After finishing the rice, we poured the warm water given at the start into the pot to make nurungji (scorched rice tea), and its nutty flavor was so intense that even full, we couldn't put our spoons down.

Thick, fluffy jumbo egg roll

Soft, fluffy jumbo egg roll

The jumbo egg roll we ordered along with it was enormous, as if they'd used a good 10 eggs. The fluffy, moist, soft texture was excellent, and it gently wrapped around the spicy duruchigi, making a perfect partner. I could feel with my whole body why so many people rave about this as a top Chowol Station restaurant.

Overall verdict

Oneuldo Utja Chowol was a true Chowol Station favorite, moving us with honest ingredients and careful cooking.

  • 100% domestic fresh pork duruchigi bursting with savory flavor: tender pork with no gamey smell and deep aged kimchi, simmered down into a perfect rice-stealer balance.
  • Premium Suhyangmi sotbap and nurungji: overwhelming gloss and stickiness that tastes sweet on its own, and nutty nurungji as the perfect finish to the meal.
  • Pleasant space and attentive service: from baby spoons to the self-serve seaweed soup corner, a comfortable restaurant ideal for family meals or gatherings.

When you crave proper, hearty, homestyle Korean food, I strongly recommend this place for a satisfying, happy meal with no regrets!
