My partner and I would jump out of bed at 3 a.m. for a burger, and we came away totally satisfied from this brand-new Woonwon City hotspot: Hippo Burger Woonwon City (히포버거 루원시티점).

We're a couple who wake up every day asking "what should we eat today?", and handmade burgers are our can't-fail answer. So when we heard that Hippo Burger, a real handmade burger place where the owner makes everything from the buns to the patties and sauces, had opened in Woonwon City's Linstrauss Alicevill, we rushed over.

Hippo Burger atmosphere and seating
Even inside the Alicevill arcade, Hippo Burger stands out thanks to its cute hippo character. It's easier to find if you come in via the car park entrance near Seojeongjin Central Market. The hip, casual interior hits you as soon as you step in, and it felt like walking into a burger joint back in the US.

The whole place has a clean white-and-blue look, and the witty hippo illustrations covering the walls left an impression. There are only about 5 tables, but the high ceiling makes it feel open, and there's a bar table by the window that looks perfect for eating alone at lunchtime. I especially liked how thoughtfully the self-serve bar is stocked for families with kids: high chairs, plus hygiene gloves and wet wipes.
Hippo Burger menu and how to order

You order at the kiosk by the entrance, which is easy. The menu has plenty of choice, from the signature Bacon Mesh Burger to the Truffle Mushroom and American Cheeseburger. We ordered the signature Spicy Hippo Burger set and the Surf & Turf Burger set, with 1 fries and 1 cheese sticks.
How did the handmade burgers taste?
Cooking starts the moment you order, and just as the smell of savory grilling patties was teasing our noses, the carefully plated burgers arrived. The first thing that surprised us was how they looked: the shine on the brioche buns, which they say are kneaded and baked in the shop, was something else.

Spicy Hippo Burger set
The Spicy Hippo Burger is piled with a smooth, savory, slightly spicy chipotle sauce on top of the patty. It could have been too rich, but the salty bacon and jalapeños hold it together, and the balance was fantastic. The 100% beef patty bursts with juice with every bite, and we couldn't help exclaiming, "This is what a real handmade burger is!"

Surf & Turf Burger set
If you like beef and shrimp, I'd absolutely recommend the Surf & Turf Burger. The juicy, mild beef mixes with the chewy-yet-tender big shrimp patty, and we kept saying "oh, this is so good!" Forks and knives are provided, but a burger is best eaten by hand, right? (Okay, that was me channeling a Busan dialect joke from the original, haha.)

Sides: cheese sticks and fries
I really recommend the cheese sticks here. They're not handmade, but they're fried well: crisp outside, with a mildly sweet, savory inside. The frying color was very clean, so I'd guess they use fresh oil, and they stayed crunchy to the last bite.
Hippo Burger Woonwon City: overall verdict and tips
Hippo Burger felt less like fast food to fill you up and more like a dish made with care from good ingredients. The house-baked bun was fluffy and soft, easy on the stomach, and the patty's deep grilled flavor lingered.

If you're looking for a proper handmade burger near Woonwon City, or a clean, pleasant spot for a date, I confidently recommend Hippo Burger. There's also an event giving a hash brown or a drink for writing a Naver review, so don't forget to grab it when you visit! I'll be back soon to work through the rest of the menu.
