Euljiro 3-ga bone grill at 5 pm after Namdaemun Market: Eulji Baektan

In short

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이) is a charcoal-grilled pork bone restaurant right outside Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. After a stop at Namdaemun Market, the writer and a friend walked in around 5 pm with no wait and shared a small bone grill (₩38,000) at spice level 2, rice balls and beer. The meat came straight off the bone, but by 6:20 pm 10 teams were waiting. For tender bone grill, go a little early or book ahead.

I went to Namdaemun Market to buy swim fins, and ended up at a great Euljiro restaurant too! The place is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이), and it's famous for melt-in-your-mouth bone grill with a spicy sauce >_<

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, a bone grill (ppyeogui, grilled pork bones) spot, is right outside Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station! Being so close to the subway makes it easy to get to, so it's perfect as a meeting spot, right? haha I even saw quite a few groups who had booked ahead and were having a get-together here haha

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui wait times: when should you go?

When I went in around 5 pm there was no wait, but when I came out around 6:20 pm there were 10 teams waiting. If you're going on a weekend, I recommend booking or going a little early.

Entrance and waiting area of Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui

I'd had brunch that day, so I got hungry early, held out with some snacks, and showed up around 5 pm. Luckily there was no wait.

But while I was eating, one team, then another came in, and before I knew it the place was full. By the time I left around 6:20 pm, there were a whopping 10 teams waiting. If you're going on a weekend, keep this in mind and either book ahead or go a little early!

What are the 1st- and 2nd-floor seats like at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui?

The 1st floor was already full of customers around 5:10 pm, so I was sent up to the 2nd floor. The stairs are a bit steep, and if you sit on the 1st floor you can watch the bones being grilled live.

Even at 17:10, when I arrived, the 1st floor was packed! The place isn't small, so I was surprised it was that full.

I was guided up to the 2nd floor. You have to take the stairs, and they're a bit steep, so be careful~

I sat on the 2nd floor, but here's one perk of the 1st floor: you can watch the bones being grilled in real time haha Don't the bones and green onions turning golden brown look so delicious?!

Glistening bone grill.. I want to eat it right now,, *drool*,,

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui menu and how to order

The main dish at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is the bone grill, and tables of three or more seemed to add grilled cuttlefish or fried dishes. There were two of us, so I ordered one small bone grill and rice balls, and you order on your phone through the QR code on the table.

Side dishes: salad, white kimchi and cubed radish kimchi

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui serves three side dishes: salad, white kimchi (baek-kimchi) and cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi). The salad tasted more of pepper than dressing.

Three side dishes: salad, white kimchi and cubed radish kimchi

The three side dishes came out first: salad, white kimchi and kkakdugi.

Cabbage salad with a strong pepper flavor

The salad had dressing, but the pepper was stronger than the dressing, so it was basically pepper cabbage..? lol It was tasty though!

Beer for ₩6,000 and rice balls for ₩5,000

At Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, beer was ₩6,000 and the rice balls were ₩5,000. The rice balls come out before the bone grill, and you shape them into little balls yourself.

A glass of beer to go with the bone grill

You can't have bone grill without beer, right?! lol Most tables were having a quick beer each, so I really couldn't resist either lol

Rice ball ingredients served before the bone grill

The rice for eating with the bone grill came out first. So that we can eat comfortably once the bone grill arrives, I'll shape them into pretty little balls~~

Round rice balls shaped by hand by a friend

I didn't make these, which made them taste even better^~^ My friend made them for me, so they were extra delicious lol Thanks, buddy haha

Rice balls with seaweed flakes and sesame oil

The rice balls have the salty flavor of seaweed flakes and sesame oil, so they can't go wrong lol

Small bone grill for ₩38,000: which spice level should you pick?

The small bone grill (for 2) at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is ₩38,000, and you choose the spice level from 1 (mildly spicy), 2 (Shin Ramyun), 3 (Buldak noodles) or 4 (very spicy). I ordered level 2, but it felt milder than Shin Ramyun, so if you're comfortable with Shin Ramyun, I'd recommend level 3.

Small bone grill for 2 in level 2 spicy sauce

I ordered one small, which serves 2. You pick the spice level when you order, and there are 4 levels: 1 is mildly spicy, 2 is Shin Ramyun, 3 is Buldak noodles and 4 is very spicy. I eat Shin Ramyun and like Buldak too, but I can't handle anything too hot, so I ordered level 2, about Shin Ramyun spiciness.

Spread of seasoned bone grill and grilled green onions

Now, shall we try a bite of the bone grill~?

So tender the meat falls off the bone with a shake

Seriously.. the tenderness of this bone grill is insane.. I just gave it one shake left and right and the meat came right off the bone lol It even drops off in clumps when I pick it up to move it to my small plate lol I was so surprised at how tender it was lol How did they make it this soft..?!

Bone grill meat easily coming off the bone

Seriously, this is all meat lol There's a ton of lean meat too lol It's a generous amount for two people!

White kimchi, radish kimchi, rice balls and grilled green onions

Eating bone grill with white kimchi
Eating bone grill with a rice ball

It's refreshing and delicious with the white kimchi, and it goes well with the kkakdugi too. The kkakdugi is cool and tasty lol When it gets a little too spicy, I eat it with a rice ball~~ I chose level 2, Shin Ramyun spiciness, but it seemed less spicy than Shin Ramyun. I think level 3 would have been even better! If you're fine with Shin Ramyun, I recommend level 3 haha

And then there were the grilled green onions, a special treat(?)..!! They were well cooked, smelled great and were sweet, a perfect combo! lol If I could wish for one thing.. I think it would have been delicious if they'd tossed rice cakes in the sauce too lol (Yes, I'm a pig.. even while eating I'm scheming how to enjoy it more lol)

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui: final verdict

The meat at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is tender and the sauce is mildly spicy, so it's worth recommending to anyone looking for a good Euljiro restaurant or Euljiro pub.
