My hair kept going flat in the summer heat, and since I'd already gotten a layered cut, my old perm had basically been cut off entirely — so this time I got a root volume perm and repair perm done together!

My designer today was Youngmin, who specializes in repair perms and damaged-hair perms! The reviews were so good that I specifically booked with her haha.

The salon is all white tones, spacious, and every seat has cushions so plush that even a long perm session didn't feel stuffy.

As soon as I walked in they brought me a welcome tea! It was warm and it loosened up my whole body.

Will curls hold on layered hair? The consultation at Park Jun Beauty Lab

I sat down and we went straight into the consultation, and even at this stage it felt very thorough. My hair already had a layered cut with a lot of layers, so I was a bit worried whether an S-curl perm would actually turn out right.

But Designer Youngmin showed me photos of similar styles and explained exactly how it would look given my current hair condition. Seeing photos alongside the explanation made everything so much clearer than just words! No wonder this is the top-rated Gangnam Station hair salon. After the consultation I decided to go with a root volume perm plus a C-curl perm together, haha.

The pre-perm cut and trimming the face-framing pieces

My hair looked kind of messy and unkempt before the treatment. Before starting the perm, she trimmed my whole head first! With so many layers, she needed to even things out so the perm would turn out well.

I also mentioned that since it's summer I tie my hair up a lot, and asked her to naturally trim my face-framing pieces too, and she really paid attention to this and cut it well haha. If you cut those pieces even slightly wrong, they stick out awkwardly when your hair is tied up lol. She trimmed them naturally to suit my face shape, which honestly touched me.

What is a Re-born repair perm?

When I went to get my hair washed, that was a little surprising too! Instead of using the same shampoo on everyone, they used different shampoo depending on your hair condition and what perm you're getting.

The perm I got today was the Re-born repair perm, which apparently uses 7 kinds of plant-based natural complex proteins to boost curl elasticity and hold for both healthy and damaged hair!

Before the actual treatment started, they applied a Shiseido hair protein treatment first! They also used a protein solution together with it — for my treatment they used Ayunche, decanted into a refill bottle. Everyone knows both of those are great products!

It didn't feel like they jumped straight into the perm — it felt like they were breaking it into stages while thinking through my hair condition, haha. After that, they did a test curl first and applied heat, and during this they even brought me a drink — such a thoughtful touch haha. Then after rinsing again, the root volume perm officially began.

Root volume perm: the difference tight sectioning makes

The biggest difference from root perms I'd gotten before was how tightly they sectioned my hair! Instead of grabbing the roots in one big chunk, they divided them into many small sections and worked through each one carefully. At another salon before, they'd grabbed the roots as one big lump and rolled it, but this time it was done in much finer detail.

Maybe because of that, instead of the volume popping up in just one spot at the roots, it felt like the volume connected across my whole head. I think this kind of detail is really what matters for root volume!!

The Re-born repair perm, step by step

After finishing the root volume perm, we moved right into the Re-born perm. She explained that since my bangs were short, she'd wind them so the curl connected naturally. She rolled the C-curl all the way through my bangs neatly with no flyaways, and I sat there for about 30 minutes.

Once all the rods were in, they did heat processing and then cooling before moving to the next step. It had a lot of stages so it took quite a while, but she explained what each step was doing along the way, so it never felt boring haha.

Here's how the curl looks once my hair is dried! I blow-dried it and the curl came out rounder and more natural than I expected. What I wanted wasn't a super tight C-curl, but a curl that falls naturally when dried.

I was worried that with the layered cut, the curl might end up looking disconnected in places, but it all came together naturally overall haha. Especially at the roots — with the volume revived, my whole head looks a lot less flat.

Does the C-curl hold when you dry it at home?

What matters most to me with a perm is whether it looks similar when I dry it myself at home, and this time when I blow-dried it, the curl came out naturally round and I loved it haha. It's not just pretty inside the salon — it's easy to style day to day too, so I'd really recommend it! Especially — the root volume bounces right back just from washing my hair, isn't that wild lol.

What mattered most to me while salon-hunting this time wasn't just going all-in on strong curls, but finding a place that works with your current hair condition. Since I was getting a perm on top of a layered cut, a thorough consultation was especially important, and Designer Youngmin made the decision easy by explaining everything with photos. I also really liked how carefully she sectioned the roots for volume!
