Sinyongsan Station snack bar, tuna mayo rice ball spread: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) snack bar in Yongsan, Seoul, about a 10-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station. The writer ordered one spread of tteokbokki, assorted fritters, a tuna mayo rice ball, sundae (Korean blood sausage) and 3 Busan fish cake skewers, and ate in a shop with a self-service corner and an open kitchen. Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is most satisfying when you combine several snacks to share rather than ordering tteokbokki alone.

Some days when you're wondering what to eat around Yongsan, you just crave Korean snack-bar food, right? Not anything fancy, just spicy-sweet tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in red sauce), crunchy fritters dunked right in, and a sip of hot fish cake broth. So this time I went to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점), a name that's familiar as a Yongsan tteokbokki favorite.

Even just from the photo, it looks like a proper spread, doesn't it? Red tteokbokki, assorted fritters, sundae (Korean blood sausage), tuna mayo rice balls and Busan fish cake. Ordering lots of things together instead of just one or two really brings out the fun of snack-bar food.

At Hyeonseonine in particular, the fun is mixing and matching rather than finishing with tteokbokki alone. Eat a bite of tteokbokki, and when it gets a little spicy, have some tuna mayo rice ball, then dunk a fritter in the tteokbokki sauce. That flow was really good. If you're looking for a Yongsan tteokbokki place where you can enjoy lots of snacks at once, it's worth keeping an eye on.
How far is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch from Sinyongsan Station?

Plan on about a 10-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station. It's not right in front of the station; you walk through the Yongsan area to find it, so it's easy to combine with other plans before or after your meal.
The exterior stood out quite a bit when I visited at night. The red roof, the white "Hyeonseonine" sign and the lights out front gave it a funny mix of old neighborhood snack bar charm and a neatly kept shop.
Inside, it feels roomier than it looks from outside. With several tables, it feels like a place to sit down and spread out lots of dishes rather than a takeout-only snack shop. It came to mind as a light but filling meal near Sinyongsan Station.
What Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is like
Small plates at the self-service corner

One thing that caught my eye at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch was the self-service corner. There's a separate space where you grab utensils and small plates yourself, which is handy when you order lots of dishes.
With snacks like tteokbokki, fritters and sundae, you often need small plates or extra utensils, right? Being able to take what you need without calling a staff member was more convenient than I expected.
The way the shop works is simple and intuitive, so even first-timers can pick it up quickly. It suits the vibe of a snack bar where you come in casually and order all the things you want to eat.
Open kitchen and old photos of Hyeonseonine

It's an open kitchen, and you can see part of it from the ordering area, so you naturally feel the energy of food being prepared. Watching staff move busily and dishes come together one by one made the wait pretty fun.
I also liked the photos of Hyeonseonine's old days hung up high. It felt like traces of the old snack bar were kept inside a neat, modern space, which gives the shop its own character.
The snack spread we ordered this time

This time at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, I ordered tteokbokki + assorted fritters + tuna mayo rice balls + sundae + 3 Busan fish cake skewers. With everything on the table, it looked hearty just to look at.
With tteokbokki at the center, there were crunchy fritters, mild sundae, nutty rice balls and hot Busan fish cake, so each dish filled in what the others lacked. If you like snack-bar food, ordering a variety to share like this suits the place better than focusing on one dish.
How to eat Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki and assorted fritters
The assorted fritters were best lightly dunked in the tteokbokki sauce. The tteokbokki was the first thing my hand went to: big rice cakes soaked in red sauce, with fish cake in it too, so it looked like proper snack-bar tteokbokki. The sauce glistened on the surface of the rice cakes, so my appetite kicked in right when I took the photo.
After a chewy rice cake with plenty of sauce, my hand naturally went to the fritters. They're good on their own, but dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, the red sauce seeps through the crunchy coating and the taste totally changes!

There are several kinds of fritters, so picking among them was fun too. With the texture of the filling, the crunch of the coating and the spicy-sweet tteokbokki sauce all layered together, wow, tteokbokki and fritters really are hard to separate.
Do tuna mayo rice balls and sundae go well with tteokbokki?

The tuna mayo rice balls are fun because you make them yourself. You mix the rice, tuna mayo and seaweed, then shape it into a bite-size ball. The process itself is surprisingly enjoyable. There's plenty of seaweed, so the nutty flavor comes through well.
Above all, taking a bite of the tuna mayo rice ball while eating spicy tteokbokki smooths out your mouth, so they pair well. The nutty, soft flavor contrasts with the tteokbokki sauce, so they're perfect to alternate.

Can't skip the sundae either. Adding offal alongside the sundae made the spread even more generous. You can dip it lightly in salt and eat it plain, or add some tteokbokki sauce; I liked that you can combine it however you like.
What role do the 3 Busan fish cake skewers play?
The 3 Busan fish cake skewers come with broth, so they were good to nibble on between bites. There's the familiar fun of pulling the fish cake off the skewer piece by piece, and a spoonful of warm broth felt like the missing puzzle piece of the snack spread.

After eating tteokbokki and fritters for a while, the seasoning can linger strongly in your mouth, and sipping the fish cake broth in between made me want to dig back in. From tteokbokki to Busan fish cake, every dish had a clear role, so I was quite happy with the lineup.
How does service work at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?

Rather than staff bringing everything, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch makes good use of self-service. The layout makes it easy to see where to get what you need, so it didn't feel like much of a hassle.
If anything, since this is a snack bar where you order lots of dishes and eat casually, the system suited it well. You can grab utensils right away and the way the shop works isn't difficult, so it looked easy to come with friends.
From the open kitchen you could see food being prepared nonstop, and the overall feel was lively. Takeout would be fine too, but if possible, I thought it'd be nice to eat the tteokbokki and fritters right there in the shop.
Atmosphere at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Inside Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, the high ceiling and warm-toned lighting caught my eye first. It wasn't overly decorated; the mood was comfortable for sitting down to eat snacks, and old photos of Hyeonseonine here and there were fun to look at.
With table seating, it seemed to suit everything from a quick solo meal to friends or couples ordering lots to share. It's an easy place to drop by on a day you want to build a meal around one dish like tteokbokki and keep adding things.
Stepping outside, the red exterior and lighting leave a strong impression. It has the friendliness unique to a snack bar rather than chasing current trends, yet it still has spots worth photographing. It's not a flashy interior so much as a space where Hyeonseonine's own color comes through clearly.
How to enjoy Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

If you're looking for a Yongsan tteokbokki place, I'd recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch not for tteokbokki alone but for spreading out a full table of different snacks. The combo we had, tteokbokki, assorted fritters, tuna mayo rice balls, sundae and 3 Busan fish cake skewers, covers spicy, nutty, crunchy, mild and hot broth, so you don't get tired of it until the end.

What stuck with me was lightly dunking the assorted fritters in the tteokbokki sauce, then taking a bite of the tuna mayo rice ball. Dip the sundae in salt and finish with hot Busan fish cake broth, and you get the flow of flavors we all expect when we go for snack-bar food.

It's about a 10-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station, so it looked like a good stop if you have plans or errands in Yongsan. The self-service corner lets you grab what you need easily, and the energy of food being made in the open kitchen stayed with me too.

Above all, snack-bar food just puts your mind at ease, doesn't it? A grand meal on a special day is great, but sometimes I miss sitting with a friend in front of red tteokbokki, picking up fritters one by one and chatting. On a day like that, if you're looking for a Yongsan tteokbokki place, enjoying a generous spread of tteokbokki, fritters, sundae, rice balls and Busan fish cake at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch sounds good to me.
