Korean restaurant in Sokcho for squid sundae takeout: Hwangbuja Twigim

In short

Hwangbuja Twigim is a Korean restaurant inside Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. I took away small portions of squid sundae and abai sundae to eat at my accommodation; the warm squid sundae was chewy, while the abai sundae was softer and mild.

While traveling in Sokcho, I stopped by Jungang Market and took away squid sundae and abai sundae from Hwangbuja Twigim (황부자튀김). I wanted to try several market foods, so I ordered small portions of both and brought them back to my accommodation.

Where is Hwangbuja Twigim?

Hwangbuja Twigim is inside Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, also known as Sokcho Jungang Market. Its location on the attached map is 16 Jungang-ro 147beon-gil, units 26–27 in the market. It was easy to stop by while looking around at the market food, and the squid sundae caught my eye.

What did I get for takeout?

I ordered small portions of squid sundae and abai sundae. Since I planned to eat other foods during the trip, splitting my order between two dishes suited me better than having a large amount of just one.

When I asked for takeout, they packed everything neatly so it was easy to eat. I like taking several market foods back to my accommodation, so I did that again this time. Looking at the food in front of the shop made me want to order more, but I was disappointed that there was only so much I could eat.

How did the squid sundae taste and feel?

When I opened the takeout package at my accommodation, the squid was generously filled.

The chewy texture of the squid worked well with the filling. Especially when it was warm, the squid did not feel tough and had a pleasantly springy texture. It was good with soy sauce or chojang (sweet and tangy chili sauce), but it was also mild enough to eat on its own.

How was abai sundae different from squid sundae?

I added a small portion of abai sundae because squid sundae alone did not feel like enough. Having them side by side made the difference between the two dishes easy to notice.

The squid sundae centered on the chewy texture of squid, while the abai sundae felt softer and milder. Alternating bite by bite kept me from getting tired of either one.

Was it good with other market food at my accommodation?

Taking away small portions of both kinds of sundae made them easy to eat with other foods. For someone like me who wants to sample several things at the market, this worked better than ordering a large amount at once.

I also liked that bringing it back to my accommodation meant I could eat comfortably in the evening without going out again. It was a takeout option I would think of when looking for something to eat at my accommodation after finishing a walk around the market.

Market takeout food enjoyed at a Sokcho accommodation

If, like me, you want to try small amounts of several foods while traveling in Sokcho, you might enjoy having both kinds of sundae together. If I go back to Sokcho, I think I would take some away again while looking around the market.
