Wonju udon shop, level 2 spicy udon & free soju: Haengbokhan Udong

I visited Haengbokhan Udong (행복한우동가게), a well-known restaurant in Wonju. It's so popular at lunchtime that people wait for a table. There's even a waiting list set up right in front of the shop!

Luckily I came outside the lunch rush, so I got in with no wait. I ordered udon, pork cutlet, mandu muchim and squid rice bowl, and honestly every single dish was delicious! Here's my truly satisfied review, starting right now~~!

Where is Haengbokhan Udong Dangwan Branch, and where do you park?

Haengbokhan Udong Dangwan Branch (행복한우동가게 단관점) is at 364 Dangu-ro, 1st floor, Wonju, and I heard you can park in front of the shop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. I came by car, so I parked out front and ate :)

How late is Haengbokhan Udong open?

Haengbokhan Udong in Wonju is open until 4:30 a.m., so it's a great place for a late-night second or third round.

Free soju or beer if you wait?

At Haengbokhan Udong Dangwan Branch, if you wait before being seated, you get one bottle of soju or beer as a freebie. And this was the really crazy part!! I've never heard of a waiting service before, haha

The menu and the police, military and firefighter discount

This is the menu at Haengbokhan Udong Dangwan Branch, so check the dishes and prices. Police officers, soldiers and firefighters get ₩1,000 off every menu item! It felt like the shop was cheering them on, which I liked :)

The atmosphere inside at lunchtime

The inside was almost full. Since it was lunchtime, people were eating quickly and leaving. So if you come during the day, even if there's a wait, a seat opens up fast! Good to know :)

What did we order at Haengbokhan Udong?

At Haengbokhan Udong Dangwan Branch we ordered four dishes: squid rice bowl, spicy udon, mandu muchim and pork cutlet :) We went as a group, so we got to try a good variety.

Squid rice bowl served in a metal basin

The squid rice bowl comes in a metal basin (yangpun) and was moderately spicy. It came out first and looked really appetizing. Best of all, I loved that it came in a basin!

Once I mixed it up, the look was just insane. With that red sauce it looks so appetizing!! And the taste was just right too. It was nicely spicy, so good :)

Spicy udon in 3 levels: how hot is level 2?

At Haengbokhan Udong you can order the udon in 3 spice levels. The hottest was about as spicy as Buldak, and the mildest was the plain udon without any red seasoning.

I ordered level 2. I didn't find it very spicy at all. It was just a moderately red-brothed udon. I tried the broth on its own and it was delicious! I think the broth is really good here by default :)

Big pork cutlet drenched in sauce

The pork cutlet was huge and generously covered in sauce. Doesn't the cutlet look insane?!? It could only be delicious, haha

The salad and corn served with the cutlet were great too :) They go well alongside it.

Sweet and sour bibim mandu

The bibim mandu (mandu muchim) was packed with vegetables, and the amount of assorted fried dumplings was really substantial. It's sweet and sour, so it's perfect for stirring up a summer appetite :)

What would we eat if we went back?

We cleared every dish we ordered at Haengbokhan Udong in Wonju, and it was all so, so good. I was happy with everything from start to finish. Hope this helps when you plan your visit~~!

Next time I want to try the udon at the hottest level!!! I think it would be tasty even spicier, or I could just eat it without the seasoning paste (dadaegi) :) And the pork cutlet was so good too!!!! Honestly, I think it'd be great to keep coming back and rotating through the menu :)
