23-dish dachi set at a Gwangalli sashimi restaurant: Gwanganda Jjji

In short

Gwanganda Jjji Gwangalli Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant with Gwangan Bridge ocean views on the 6th floor of Sanbada Hoe Town in Gwangalli, Busan. On a Busan-native friend's strong recommendation, the writer booked ahead and ate the 55,000-won-per-person dachi set (a multi-course seafood spread) in a private room: 23 dishes, including spicy raw fish salad, grilled eel, cream shrimp, an assorted seafood platter, a sashimi platter, blue crab stew, braised rockfish and abalone porridge. Because Gwanganda Jjji serves sushi rice alongside the sashimi for making your own sushi, it is a strong pick for family gatherings and group dinners.

Hello, this is 🐮!

Introducing Gwanganda Jjji, an ocean-view sashimi restaurant that's perfect for gatherings.

When you think of Busan, you have to eat one thing — sashimi! The dish you'll regret not having eaten.

I used to buy takeout from sashimi centers a lot, but with the hot weather I wanted somewhere quiet where we could have the space to ourselves and enjoy not just sashimi but a variety of seafood dishes. I asked my Busan-native friend, and she strongly recommended Gwanganda Jjji. True to its name, you can taste a colorful dachi (seafood banquet) spread there, so I booked and rushed right over. There's always a reason behind a local's recommendation.

Gwangan Bridge window hall and private rooms for 8

Walking into Gwanganda Jjji, the kitchen is on the left, a private room closed off by a sliding door is also on the left, and the main hall is straight ahead. What hits you first is Gwanganda Jjji's main hall with its floor-to-ceiling windows giving an open, airy feeling. A space spacious enough for group visits, and with that comes the much-anticipated view — the Gwangan Bridge ocean view..♡

You can watch the sunset over Gwangan Bridge, or the fireworks over Gwangan Bridge, from front-row seats.

Next up, the private room. Slide open the door and a private room for up to 8 people appears. It can also be combined with the room next door for groups larger than 8, making Gwanganda Jjji perfect for birthday parties in Gwangalli, family gatherings, or company dinners.

On the table there's a tablet for ordering, plus tissues, soy sauce, chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), paper cups, and a bottle opener.

What's in the 55,000-won dachi set?

Gwanganda Jjji's signature menu is the dachi set at ₩55,000 per person — a 23-course meal that includes a sashimi platter, seafood, abalone porridge and more!

There's also an abalone porridge (₩15,000) available to order between noon and 2pm, so you can have a simple yet nutrient-packed lunch. And of course, a perfect meal needs drinks — Gwanganda Jjji has them too. Corkage is paid as well (₩10,000 per bottle) ☆

Side dishes and the first course

Basic table setting with small plates and ssam vegetables

The basic setting laid out once the order is placed. Individually wrapped utensils, small plates, ssam (wrap) vegetables, savory makjang (fermented paste) and garlic & wasabi.

Basic side dishes of makjang and garlic wasabi

Pour the chojang and soy sauce on the table and you're fully ready to eat — right as the spread arrives. Wild ginseng, salad, hoe-muchim (spicy mixed sashimi salad), cheese scallops, steamed abalone, blood cockle salad, soy-marinated crab, cream shrimp, pufferfish skin salad — truly a jaw-dropping amount of food.

Side dish plates of soy-marinated crab and pufferfish skin salad

We warmed up with the sweet-and-sour sashimi salad, the pufferfish skin salad, and the blood cockle salad that clings perfectly to your palate. I wanted to mix the seasoned blood cockle straight into rice right away, but held off since so much more food was still coming.

Chive pancake and cream shrimp plate

Grilled eel, cheese scallops and cream shrimp

Grilled eel with proper smoky flavor, best eaten hot; soft scallops piled with rich mayo sauce; savory buchu-jeon (chive pancake); and cream shrimp — crispy outside, tender inside, putting Chinese restaurants to shame.

Personally the eel and shrimp were totally my type; is this really a sashimi restaurant?!!!!!!

Roll with shrimp tempura and crab stick

A roll with shrimp tempura, cucumber and crab stick, soy-marinated crab loaded with rice-stealing meat, and beautifully steamed abalone.

Softly steamed abalone

Assorted seafood platter

Next came the assorted seafood platter — raw shrimp, top shell, sea squirt, abalone sashimi, live octopus.

Assorted seafood platter of raw shrimp, top shell, sea squirt and live octopus

Very fresh seafood with more sweetness than fishiness. One bottle of soju just disappears with this.

Sashimi platter of flounder, red seabream, spotted flounder and sea bass

Four-kind sashimi platter and make-your-own sushi

Beautiful sashimi tastes good too. The main event of the day — a neatly arranged sashimi platter of flounder, red seabream, spotted flounder, and sea bass!

Sea bass, flounder, red seabream, spotted flounder. Cut to just the right thickness, not too thin nor too thick. Super fresh with that chewy texture alive in every bite — I couldn't stop smiling happily the whole time.

Sushi rice was also served, so you can make your own sushi. I went with flounder + aged kimchi sushi, cleared it right away.

Blue crab stew, tempura and braised rockfish, and still more

Nope, not done yet. But it's not over until it's over.

Next came crab and shrimp tempura, blue crab stew, and braised rockfish. One sip of the broth from the refreshing blue crab stew instantly hits the reset button. The crab's signature sweetness and coolness is insane.

Pot of refreshing blue crab stew

The tempura is the definition of crispy outside, juicy inside — would pair perfectly with beer. Japanese-style restaurant tempura is indeed good.

Crispy crab and shrimp tempura

The braised rockfish — firm flesh, well-seasoned, the textbook definition of braised fish. This is a flavor everyone will like, no exceptions. Along with the perfectly cooked radish, it was absolute perfection.

Finishing with abalone porridge made with abalone innards

To finish, a savory-smelling, nutrient-packed abalone porridge made with abalone organs. Abalone meat was also included, so the texture was perfect too.

It's delicious even eaten plain, but it goes perfectly with the blood cockle salad and braised rockfish. Everyone, eat it two, three times like this!!!!

Thumbs-up gesture at the end of the meal

Who is Gwanganda Jjji best for?

Two happy thumbs up. Gwanganda Jjji is a Gwangalli sashimi restaurant where you can really feel the charm of a dachi restaurant's variety of dishes. For ₩55,000 per person, you can enjoy everything from seafood to sashimi to a full meal.

With an ocean view of Gwangan Bridge and private rooms, it's perfect for family gatherings or group dinners! For anyone looking for a Gwangalli sashimi restaurant, I recommend Gwanganda Jjji. This is really the place my Busan-native friend strongly recommended, haha.
