Gwangju pork cutlet spot: spicy duo set with Shin Ramyun heat, Filling
In short
Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch is a donkatsu (Korean pork cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor next to Gwangju Hyundai Hospital in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, reportedly listed on Daedonyeojido, a nationwide map of top pork cutlet restaurants. On a weekday lunch, the writer and her mother shared the 2-person Spicy Duo Set (spicy onion katsu, spicy cheese katsu and a drink); the sauce was about as hot as Shin Ramyun, and the king-size cutlets were so big that the leftovers went home in free takeout containers. For two people who want to share spicy katsu, the Spicy Duo Set at Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch is a good fit.

Today I visited Filling Donkatsu in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju, which made the national donkatsu (pork cutlet) hotspot map. I'd eaten at Filling before because it has long been famous for its cutlets, and I wanted to go again after a long time, haha.
Where is Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch, and where do you park?
Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch is on the 2nd floor of the building right next to Gwangju Hyundai Hospital in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. It isn't a spot that catches your eye from the main road, and it's on the 2nd floor, yet it became a famous, truly legit favorite!

There's a paid parking lot right next to Filling where you can register for up to 1 hour free. I visited on a weekday lunch, and 1 hour was plenty to eat and leave.

Waiting at Filling Donkatsu: how was a weekday lunch?
Only the 2nd floor is used for dining now, and the 3rd floor has become a waiting area. A weekday lunch was relaxed, but on weekends it's best to check the Tabling app before you go.

When I visited in the old days, both the 2nd and 3rd floors were seating, but now only the 2nd floor takes guests and the 3rd floor is a waiting space. I can't even imagine how long the wait gets,,

I went on a weekday lunch so it was relaxed, but if you're visiting on a weekend, I think it's a good idea to check the Tabling app first.
Filling Donkatsu menu: is a set better than single items?
Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch has set menus by number of people, and they're a bit cheaper than ordering separately, so I recommend a set. Naver Map only showed the single items, but when I went to order, there were all kinds of set menus by group size! We were craving something spicy, so we ordered the 2-person Spicy Duo Set.
Free refills on the starter salad and soup

At Filling, you get one vegetable salad and soup per person before the meal. The soup tastes like a nostalgic memory~ The chicory salad was nutty and delicious too. We scraped the plates clean. Salad and soup can be refilled for free, but I know how huge the cutlets are, so I held back..

Filling made the Daedonyeojido donkatsu map~~ and there's a reason it's so good, haha.
What's in the Spicy Duo Set? Spicy onion katsu + spicy cheese katsu

As the name says, the Filling Spicy Duo Set is two kinds of spicy donkatsu plus one drink: spicy onion katsu and spicy cheese katsu! Can you tell the size of the cutlets from how small the big can of Coke Zero looks? Just think of them as king-size katsu, lol.
Spicy onion katsu: the onion is the kick

Even looking at it again, my mouth waters..🤤 The spicy onion katsu comes with spicy sauce poured over it, topped with raw sliced onion and cheongyang chili peppers. The onion is the kick. If you like onions, definitely order it.

At first I thought, not much onion? But it was sliced thin and piled up in layers. Eat a piece of the thick-fried cutlet with the onion on top and the onion feels kind of fresh? and goes together perfectly.

I gave the spicy onion katsu to my mom, who doesn't like cheese and loves onions, haha. Filling is a place she already liked, so she enjoyed it so much.
Spicy cheese katsu: heat about like Shin Ramyun

The spicy cheese katsu has cheese inside, so it looks even thicker. Even with the sauce poured on generously, you can feel the crisp, crunchy sound and texture of a really well-fried cutlet when you cut it with a knife.

Cheese is packed generously between the thick slices of pork, so of course it's delicious~~ The sauce is a little spicy for someone who can't handle heat, but the cheese neutralizes it and I munched happily. I did pick off the cheongyang peppers, though, haha. I'd say the sauce heat felt like Shin Ramyun.
Can you take leftovers home from Filling Donkatsu?

Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch lets you take leftover cutlet home and even gives you the takeout containers for free 👍🏼 The cutlets are so huge that we couldn't finish them. I packed up the rest and it solved dinner too. Done~hehe

I visited Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch before it got as famous as it is now, and it's still delicious, so I left happy. It's donkatsu everyone will like, and I also recommend it as a date spot in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. If you love donkatsu, I highly recommend visiting Filling Donkatsu in Yongbong-dong.
