I visited Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch (고향옥얼큰순대국 수원 오목천점), known as a go-to sundaeguk spot in Omokcheon, Suwon. It was a slightly special day for me: after my first-ever health checkup with gastroscopy and colonoscopy, I had fasted for about 36 hours, and this was finally my first meal. After so long without food, I didn't want something that was only spicy and harsh. I was craving a hot broth with plenty of meat in it. I love sundaeguk anyway, but I like the meat more than the sundae, so I ordered the spicy meat-only cypress set without a second thought.
It was a hearty meal: spicy sundaeguk packed with meat, plus bossam (boiled pork), blood sausage, jeonbyeong (thin rolled pancake) and galbi mandu (short-rib dumplings).
Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Omokcheon at a glance

Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch is a good place to go in Omokcheon-dong when you're craving hot gukbap (rice soup) or spicy sundaeguk. The spicy meat-only dish I ordered suits people who prefer meat over sundae, with tender yet chewy meat and tripe in generous amounts, so it felt filling. Adding the cypress set with bossam, blood sausage, jeonbyeong and galbi mandu made it far more satisfying and fun than a single bowl of gukbap. Since it was my first meal after such a long fast, that mix of a warm spoonful of broth and soft meat stuck with me for a long time.

Is Gohyangok Omokcheon good for eating alone?
The inside has the comfortable feel typical of a gukbap restaurant, so it's easy to focus on eating. There are seats where you can sit comfortably alone and tables for groups, so it works for a solo lunch, a family meal or a hearty dinner. Gukbap has a reputation as a quick solo meal, but when you order sides like the cypress set, you can enjoy a surprisingly relaxed spread.

There's also a spot where you can grab basic sides and extra banchan (side dishes) as needed, which was a nice touch.

Gohyangok menu and what's in the cypress set
Gohyangok has plenty of choices, from mild broth to spicy broth, meat-focused gukbap, suyuk (boiled pork slices) and cypress menus. If you like sundaeguk but the sundae texture is too much, or you prefer head meat and other meat over sundae, the meat-only menu should suit you especially well. That day I ordered the spicy meat-only cypress set.
It's built around spicy meat-only sundaeguk, with bossam, blood sausage, jeonbyeong and galbi mandu alongside, so it was perfect for a day when picking just one dish felt like a shame. The cypress set came with about 4–5 slices of bossam, blood sausage, jeonbyeong and galbi mandu. It felt as if I'd ordered the gukbap and several sides separately, so the table looked much fuller.

How does the spicy meat-only sundaeguk taste?
Gohyangok's spicy meat-only sundaeguk has a sharp, spicy broth with generous meat and tripe, and it arrived hot in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), which made it a hearty first meal after fasting. The spicy broth wasn't muddy or harsh; it woke up my appetite with a clean kick, and with every spoonful my stomach felt warmer.
Best of all, there was plenty of meat. It was tender but still slightly chewy, soaked in the broth, and the plain savory flavor of the meat blended well with the spicy soup. I usually like sundaeguk but enjoy the meat more than the sundae, so a menu built around meat instead of sundae was more satisfying. Fishing out the meat and then adding rice to the soup made one bowl quite filling on its own.
There was tripe in it too, and its chewy texture added something different from the soft meat. Alternating a piece of meat and a piece of tripe, with the spicy broth in between, kept the texture from getting monotonous, so I enjoyed it to the very end. If you like hot sundaeguk loaded with meat, or prefer meat and offal over sundae, this is a good pick.

Cypress set sides: bossam, pisundae, jeonbyeong and galbi mandu
The Gohyangok cypress set comes with about 4–5 slices of bossam plus blood sausage, jeonbyeong and galbi mandu, and eating it with the spicy meat-only sundaeguk made the table feel much more generous. Gukbap alone is filling, but tasting a bit of everything was fun.
The bossam was mild, so after the spicy broth it felt like a reset for my mouth. Its soft meat had a different feel from the meat in the soup, so they went well together. The blood sausage is a must in the cypress set if you enjoy sundae. I don't eat a lot of sundae, but after focusing on the meat-only soup, one or two slices alongside were easy to enjoy.
The jeonbyeong was soft and easy to pair, and the galbi mandu had a hearty filling that went well with the spicy broth. Eating a galbi mandu after a spoonful of hot, spicy soup made the meal feel even fuller. If just sundaeguk feels a bit lacking, or you come with two or more people and want to share several dishes, the cypress set is a good add-on. I ate the spicy meat-only soup as the main and dipped into the bossam and galbi mandu in between, and the combination of broth, meat and sides worked really well for me.
