Dangsan offal BBQ: first grilled daechang and teukyang, Chodaechang

In short

Chodaechang Dangsan Station is a Blue Ribbon Survey-listed Korean BBQ restaurant specialising in beef tripe and daechang (beef large intestine), on the 2nd floor right in front of Exits 11 and 12 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. The writer, who had only ever eaten daechang in hotpot, ordered Mixed Grill B (daechang, teukyang and makchang) and doenjang sulbap at Chodaechang Dangsan Station, tasted grilled daechang and teukyang (premium beef tripe) for the first time, and enjoyed an easy meal because the staff grilled everything at the table. The crunchy, chewy teukyang was the most memorable part of a satisfying first visit.

I had only ever eaten daechang (beef large intestine) in hotpot, never grilled. And teukyang (premium first stomach) was a total first, so I was really curious how it would taste. I'd heard this was a Blue Ribbon restaurant, so I headed over full of expectations: Chodaechang Dangsan Station (초대창 당산역점)!

What's the atmosphere like inside Chodaechang Dangsan Station, and is it clean?

The restaurant was kept clean and the tables were spaced out nicely. When I think of an offal BBQ place I picture smoke everywhere and a chaotic vibe, but this was a comfortable place to eat.

Best of all, the staff were very friendly.

Paper-wrapped utensils and table setting

The chopsticks and spoons were each wrapped in paper, and the plates, cups and wet wipes were all neatly arranged too, so I really got the sense that they take cleanliness seriously.

What should first-timers order at Chodaechang Dangsan Station?

Menu lineup including mixed grills at Chodaechang Dangsan Station

I ordered Mixed Grill B (daechang + teukyang + makchang) and doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice). The menu has a wide range, from special cuts like daechang, teukyang, makchang (beef abomasum) and yeomtong (heart) to galbi-sal (rib meat).

  • Mixed Grill B (daechang + teukyang + makchang)
  • Doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice)

For a first visit, the mixed grill, where you can try several cuts at once, seemed the safest choice.

What side dishes come at Chodaechang Dangsan Station?

Side dishes including salad and seasoned lettuce

Among the side dishes, the salad was seriously good. I don't know whether they grind bread into it or what, but anyway, it was delicious. The seasoned lettuce was tangy and tasty too, perfect for cutting the richness of the meat between bites.

If you run out of sides you can ask for more. I asked for kimchi and was told they only had finely chopped kimchi, so I took that and ate it anyway, hehe.

The Mixed Grill B I ordered arrived. Wow, it's huge~~~~!

Another great thing about Chodaechang Dangsan Station is that staff grill the meat piece by piece, so you don't have to worry about grilling at all.

Wow, they look like garaetteok (long rice cakes)!

How do grilled daechang, makchang and teukyang taste the first time?

The grilled daechang at Chodaechang Dangsan Station was golden on the outside and packed with fat inside, so the moment I bit in it was rich and sweet. The makchang had a great chewy texture and got nuttier the more I chewed. Perfect with drinks, mmm.

The surprise standout: crunchy teukyang (premium beef tripe)

The most memorable was surprisingly the teukyang. It's said to be the cow's first stomach, with almost no fat and lots of protein, a premium cut. The texture is a kind of crunchy chewiness, and at first I thought, what is this? But the more I ate, the more charming it got. I think I get a little of why so many people seek out teukyang.

It was really delicious, okay. I'm jealous of myself back then...

Is the doenjang sulbap at Chodaechang Dangsan Station worth ordering as a side?

Serving robot at Chodaechang Dangsan Station

At Chodaechang Dangsan Station, a serving robot brings your order. I want one at home too, so I can lie around all day.

Doenjang sulbap, delivered by the robot. If you're picking a side, definitely order this, it's sooo good. It was a little spicy for a spice wimp like me, but it went well with the meat, and it was a hearty, warm meal.

Chodaechang Dangsan Station: overall verdict

  • A meal that beat expectations, as you'd expect from a Blue Ribbon restaurant
  • Even teukyang, which I'd never had, was easy to enjoy
  • Friendly staff made the visit even more satisfying
  • A Dangsan Station BBQ spot that's great with a drink
  • Kind staff who grill for you make it easy to relax and eat
  • The clean space suits dates, company dinners and drinking sessions alike
