Gyodong, Daegu Thai restaurant: shell-and-all crab curry at Thai Yami

In short

Thai Yami is a Thai and Southeast Asian restaurant on Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu. On a weekday lunch with a friend, the writer ordered pad thai (13,000 won), kai phrai fried chicken (21,000 won), poo pad pong curry and a limeade. The poo pad pong curry was the highlight: the crab was soft enough to eat shell and all. With its open kitchen and cozy interior, Thai Yami also works well for group meals.

Table setting at Thai Yami
Crackers and corn salad served while waiting

A staff member took our order, and while we waited for the food, we were given some crackers. The corn salad went really well with the crackers. It was delicious.

Drinks — limeade for ₩5,500

Thai Yami's drinks: fresh-squeezed orange juice ₩5,000, limeade and lemonade ₩5,500, soft drinks (cola, sprite, zero, fanta) ₩2,500. I ordered the limeade. It has a rich, refreshing lime flavor that I really liked.

Table setting with pad thai and kai phrai served first

Pad thai, ₩13,000 — the signature dish with shrimp and nuts

Finally, the main dishes arrived. The pad thai and kai phrai came out first. Kai phrai also comes in a smaller size, so it's a good pick as a side dish too.

A plate of Thai Yami's pad thai, ₩13,000

Pad thai, ₩13,000. Pad thai, the classic Southeast Asian dish, is a sweet-and-sour stir-fried noodle dish made with Thai Yami's aged signature sauce. It's their signature menu item, so you have to try it.

It's loaded with plump shrimp, and the crunchy bean sprouts and noodles are stir-fried together nicely. The savory nuts made it even tastier. They mix it carefully so nothing flies off the plate.

I love eating pad thai even when I travel in Southeast Asia, and Thai Yami's pad thai is so good that I'd recommend it. If you like pad thai, you have to try this one. It was totally my kind of pad thai.

Kai phrai, ₩21,000 — handmade fried chicken topped with cheese

Kai phrai (₩21,000). It's a handmade fried chicken & salad dish you can only get at Thai Yami. The chicken is salty and addictive. It goes really well eaten together with the salad.

There's cheese sprinkled on top, which makes it even more savory. The chicken is tender and delicious too. It was a texture I hadn't tried before, so it exceeded expectations, and my friend and I both agreed it was tasty. The mini size is ₩9,000, so it's a good choice as a side dish too :)

Table with Thai Yami's main dishes laid out

My top recommendation, the poo pad pong curry you can eat shell and all

Thai Yami's poo pad pong curry with rice

The dish I want to recommend most from Thai Yami, a place to eat in Gyodong, Daegu, is the poo pad pong curry. I've had it at Southeast Asian restaurants in Daegu before, but what's special about Thai Yami's poo pad pong curry is that you can eat it shell and all. The shell is soft and tender, so it's delicious even eaten whole. The sauce is so good that eating it with the rice that comes with it is heavenly. Officially rice-thief-worthy 👍

Looking at these photos makes me want to eat it again. The crab shell on the outside is so soft it's crunchy yet melts right in your mouth :) You really have to try it.
