Zoblack, the Marine City salt bread spot, sits on the first floor of the Marine City Xi apartment complex retail block. Being inside Marine City, it's close to Hana Resort and Park Hyatt Busan, and with underground parking in the building the accessibility was great too. As a bakery loved by Busan locals, it's also a salt bread spot that travelers make sure to stop by when visiting Busan.

Inside Zoblack: atmosphere and the two tables

Inside, Zoblack is a compact, mostly-takeout store with 2 tables. The dim, moody lighting and the long, U-shaped display case made a strong impression.

The soft, European-style interior felt sophisticated, and even though it's a compact takeout store, the long U-shaped display case made the visuals so good.

There are 2 tables inside too, so some tourists were resting for a bit, but most orders were takeout, packed to go, or delivery — a ton of delivery orders were coming in.

Coffee and drink menus made to pair well with salt bread were on offer, and Zoblack's salt bread is said to have a rich, savory flavor from premium Danish butter, with fillings and toppings all made in-house for deeper flavor.

Zoblack has a baking room inside the store and follows a same-day-made, same-day-sold rule, kneading dough daily and selling only bread baked that day — the crispy-textured salt bread made with French flour and durum flour is what it's known for.

How many kinds of salt bread does Zoblack bake?

Zoblack's salt bread lineup runs from plain salt bread to truffle, mentaiko (salted pollock roe), and jambon-beurre — over ten kinds. But visiting in the late afternoon meant the plain salt bread sold out right in front of me! It really is a salt bread hotspot — everyone had cleaned it right out!

The variety was really extensive. That every single one of these salt breads and desserts is made in-house at the store is honestly impressive.

Dessert selection ordered at Zoblack

Zoblack's matcha tigre is ₩3,800 and the tiger cookie is ₩3,500. Tigre is a French baked pastry, similar in texture to financier but with chocolate in the center, making it a bit more upscale than financier.

The tigre is crisp outside and moist inside — it's called tiger cookie because the chocolate-marbled surface looks like tiger stripes. Packed with rich ganache chocolate, it was plenty sweet and a perfect match with a cup of coffee. The matcha tigre, too, had bittersweet matcha-flavored chocolate running through the soft baked pastry, and the matcha aroma and moistness were even more charming.

Lemon madeleine, ₩2,000

A lemon madeleine with a pretty, well-risen belly. The moist, soft madeleine had a subtle, refreshing lemon scent spreading through it, and the harmony of buttery flavor with lemon was so delicious.

How do the hotteok, choco and red bean butter salt breads taste?

The three salt breads I tried at Zoblack were hotteok salt bread ₩3,800, choco salt bread ₩3,500, and red bean butter salt bread ₩3,800.

The moist salt bread was buttery all the way to the bottom — really moist. The subtle cinnamon aroma of hotteok spread through it, blending naturally with the salty salt bread.

Choco salt bread, ₩3,500

Choco salt bread packed with chocolate

A choco salt bread no chocolate lover can pass up. Packed with chocolate, it had a rich, sweet chocolate flavor, and it seemed perfect for anyone into that sweet-and-salty combo.

Red bean butter salt bread, ₩3,800

It grabbed me by the visuals alone. The French butter had such a soft, rich flavor, and the red bean's own sweetness came through fully — the combination of red bean, butter, and salt bread needs no further explanation. The red bean butter was so good.

Not having gotten to try the plain salt bread was disappointing, so Zoblack, the Marine City salt bread spot, is somewhere I'll have to go back to soon. Why not enjoy the many varieties of salt bread at Zoblack, a spot well known to both Busan locals and travelers?
