Dongtan Mokdong tonkatsu, 2pm queue and stretchy cheese: Kkot Gatsu

In short

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a Japanese-style pork cutlet (tonkatsu) restaurant in the Mokdong residential area of Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Arriving after 2pm, past the lunch peak, there was still a wait, and the flower cutlet, loin cutlet and cheese cutlet all came out crisp outside and juicy inside, with cheese that stretched in long strands. A nearby public parking lot gave 90 minutes free, so driving to Kkot Gatsu was easy too.

While hunting for Dongtan Mokdong restaurants, I suddenly craved a proper pork cutlet, so I went to Kkot Gatsu near my house. Some days you just want that Japanese-style cutlet — crispy outside, juicy inside — more than anything else.

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Mokdong sits near a public parking lot, which took some of the parking worry off my mind. At the time of my visit, the nearby public lot was free for 90 minutes, so I parked comfortably and headed in to eat.

Parking matters just as much as the food when you're chasing a good restaurant. Especially for a place like this, tucked into a residential area in Dongtan Mokdong — if parking is a hassle, even great food makes you hesitate to come back.

Ordering three: flower cutlet, loin cutlet and cheese cutlet

Once I sat down, what I was most looking forward to was the most basic option — the flower cutlet.

The reason I love pork cutlet is that texture you get from biting into crispy breading and tender meat at the same time.

Japanese-style cutlet in particular keeps that crispy coating while the meat inside stays moist — it's something I crave now and then.

Kkot Gatsu was a place that would satisfy anyone who likes this style of cutlet.

Since it had been a while since I'd had pork cutlet, that first bite — crispy coating with juicy meat — tasted especially good. It's a rich dish, but it didn't feel too heavy, and it properly satisfied that craving I'd been having.

How the cutlets tasted: crisp outside, juicy inside, stretchy cheese

With pork cutlet, I think the texture matters even more in person than it looks in photos.

It's disappointing when the breading is too thick or turns soggy over time, but this time I got exactly the crispy texture I'd hoped for.

The outside was crispy while the meat inside stayed juicy, so every bite had a noticeable contrast in texture. The cheese cutlet was genuinely loaded with cheese — it stretched and stretched. It made the whole trip, craving satisfied and all, feel worth it.

Plate of sauces and sides served with the cutlet

I personally like to taste the cutlet itself first before adding sauce or sides, and I liked that there were several ways to eat it with sauce. Switching up the accompaniments partway through, instead of sticking with one flavor the whole time, kept it enjoyable right to the end.

Why I would go back to Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch

What stuck with me most from this visit was, again, that there were more people than I expected.
