Cheesewave Bucheon City Hall is an American-style pizza place in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, within 5 minutes of Exit 2 of Bucheon City Hall Station, in the alley next to Hyundai Department Store Jungdong. Visiting just after lunchtime, the writer had a half bacon potato, half combination pizza with a cola; the crispy cheese crust edge and the freshly fried potato topping stood out. Cheesewave Bucheon City Hall is a good pick for trying two flavors in one half-and-half order, and with draft beer and soju at ₩2,500 after 8 PM, it also works as a pizza-and-beer spot.

Burger and beer date spot near Sadang Station: cloud burger at Misfits

Misfits Sadang (Misfits Burger & Pub) is a craft burger restaurant in the Sadang Station food alley in Dongjak, Seoul, known for its cloud burger, which arrives under a food dome infused with smoke. Eulji Darak Gangnam Station (을지다락 강남역) is a pasta and risotto restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Gangnam-daero 96-gil, within a 10-minute walk of Gangnam Station Exit 11 in Seoul. On an early visit to Eulji Darak Gangnam Station, the writer ordered spicy crab risotto, corn gnocchi and creamy onion fries, plus an extra baguette for dipping in the corn gnocchi sauce, which was delicious. With good atmosphere, plating and flavor across the board, Eulji Darak Gangnam Station is an easy recommendation for dates, blind dates and meetups with friends.

Eel bowl restaurant in Yeoksam: hitsumabushi & butadon, Yangsando

Yangsando Yeoksam is a Nagoya-style freshwater eel rice bowl (hitsumabushi) restaurant between Yeoksam Station and Gangnam Station in Seoul. The writer ordered hitsumabushi and butadon (pork rice bowl) at Yangsando Yeoksam and ate the hitsumabushi three ways in order: the eel on its own, mixed with nori flakes, scallion and wasabi, and finally as ochazuke with tea broth poured over, which was the tastiest. Thanks to the smoky flavour of the fire-grilled eel and the neat set meal, Yangsando Yeoksam is worth a return visit for a date or a solo meal near Yeoksam Station.

Seodaejeon Station galbi spot: heaping yukhoe bibimbap, Idobonga

Idobonga is a galbi (short rib) restaurant on Oryu-ro in Jung-gu, Daejeon, near Seodaejeon Station. On a late lunch after an errand at Seodaejeon Station, the writer had Idobonga's galbitang (short rib soup), whose broth was clean with no meaty smell, and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap) piled so high with raw beef that just half a bowl of rice filled the dish. With takeaway coffee after the meal and ice cream on offer, Idobonga makes a satisfying one-meal stop near Seodaejeon Station.

Pyeongchon pho restaurant, self-serve cilantro and coffee: Pho Witch

Pho Witch is a Vietnamese restaurant in the food alley of the Pyeongchon academy district in Anyang, Gyeonggi, run by a brother and sister who are 7 years apart. On this visit the writer ordered the Banh Mi Crazy Set (pho plus banh mi) and the Don't Be Lonely Solo Pho & Fried Rice Set (pho plus pineapple fried rice), with unlimited cilantro, coffee and tea from the self-serve bar. With a Vietnam-trip interior and generous sets, Pho Witch is a Pyeongchon pho spot that suits anyone who wants to sample several dishes at once.

Pork BBQ near Siheung City Hall Station, seen on TV: Gongdan Gamjatang

Gongdan Gamjatang Samgyeopsal is a pork BBQ restaurant in Janghyeon-dong and Janggok-dong, Siheung, about 7 minutes on foot from exit 3 of Siheung City Hall Station, and it serves free gamjatang (pork bone stew) when you order meat. After running errands, the writer ordered the mixed pork platter, gonggi jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) and Mot-ijeo bul-naengmyeon (fiery cold noodles) for lunch, and the free gamjatang, about the size of a small order, plus the cheongyang-chili-spiced noodles filled the table to overflowing. For family meals and group gatherings where you want both grilled pork and gamjatang, Gongdan Gamjatang Samgyeopsal is well worth recommending.

Ansan café pairing a Nutella waffle, banana and iced Americano: Nyanya

Nyanya is a dessert café with resident cats on the 5th floor of World Town Building A in Gojan-dong, Ansan. At Nyanya the writer ordered the Nutella Hong Kong waffle, an iced Americano and a green grape ade, and found the crisp-outside, soft-inside waffle especially good eaten with the banana served alongside the Nutella. Thanks to its wide picture windows and cats, Nyanya is a great pick for a date or a visit with kids.

Uiwang yakiniku with a child: limited skirt steak, Yakiniku Pungyeong

Yakiniku Pungyeong is a Japanese-style charcoal-grill beef restaurant on Botdeul-gil in Poil-dong, Uiwang, Gyeonggi. On a dinner visit with a child, the writer ordered Yakiniku Pungyeong's signature snowflake short rib and limited-supply skirt steak, both tender enough for the child to eat happily. A no-miss prize draw added drinks and a beef tartare rice ball wrapped in gamtae seaweed, and canapés and watermelon came for dessert. For a family dinner with kids or a beef date night near Uiwang and Indeogwon, Yakiniku Pungyeong is a good fit.
