A pan of instant tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

What did I dig into most fiercely back in my school days? Not romance, not studying, haha. All I remember is going out to eat with my friends and building our friendship that way!

We lived on pocket money back then, so we usually went to cheap snack bars with big portions, ate tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) in lots of broth, and finished with fried rice. Instant tteokbokki, the nostalgic snack we enjoyed on a budget!

Prices have gone up quite a bit since then, but it's still going strong and is even hot with the MZ generation, haha. So I went to a famous instant tteokbokki spot in Yongridan-gil 🫶🫶

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is an instant tteokbokki restaurant in Yongsan, a 3-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station Exits 5 and 6. Turn into the narrow alley between a pub and a real estate office and you'll see a yellow chimney. Right under that chimney is Hyeonseonine!

It's been ages since I saw a chimney like this in the middle of the city, haha.

Boiling tteokbokki right at your table is the charm of instant tteokbokki, but on a hot day like this I wondered how many people would come... and apparently plenty of people share our craving for it! It was a weekday, so luckily we skipped the wait, haha, but customers kept coming in.

Self-service bar, restroom, and a date spot too

Pickled radish and bowls are self-service at the bar. The downside is that you'll be dripping with sweat ^^, but there's a restroom inside, so women will like it too. A great-value Yongsan date course, highly recommended!

What's in the ₩22,000 instant tteokbokki for two?

Instant tteokbokki for 2 / 22.0 (₩22,000): rice cakes + fish cakes + 2 eggs + vegetable sari + ramyeon sari + chewy noodle sari + 4 yakimandu

Uncooked pan of instant tteokbokki for two

Rice cakes, fish cakes, eggs, ramyeon, chewy noodles, yakimandu! Everything comes at no extra charge at Hyeonseonine. It'd feel wrong without this basic setup, haha. So many add-ins (sari), what a spread!

Fish cake broth is served too, which made me very happy, haha. You can also adjust the spice level: mild, medium or spicy. When eating the spicy one, sipping the fish cake broth in between helped cool things down, haha.

How to cook instant tteokbokki: it's not hard

As the name says, you boil it yourself on the spot, so it comes uncooked. But it's the lowest difficulty level, so no worries! Detailed instructions, from heat control to fried rice, are posted at every table.

Instant tteokbokki starting to boil on the induction burner

The induction burner is stronger than I expected, so it boils up fast. If you don't stir, the noodles can stick to the pan, so just stir well with the ladle. Easy, right? But I missed even that while chatting with my friend, and a staff member quickly noticed and came over to stir for us. So kind, and so sorry ^^;

Tasting the wheat rice cakes, chewy noodles, egg and yakimandu one by one

There are lots of ingredients in instant tteokbokki, but the star of tteokbokki is the rice cake, right? Soft, squishy and tender! Smooth and chewy is the charm of wheat rice cakes. They were really chewy and delicious!

There were plenty of chewy noodles (jjolmyeon) too. Noodles in tteokbokki are just so good. Chewy strands soaked in spicy, moist sauce!

Gently mash the egg, yolk and all, mix it into the tteokbokki sauce and dig in. Spicy and nutty, so delicious!

The crispy fried yakimandu is fine on its own, but? haha. It's best soaked deep in the sweet and spicy sauce until it's seasoned inside and out!

The tender fish cakes were yummy too. Every sari has its own role, haha.

Finish with fried rice

We can't just let this delicious sauce go to waste. Fried rice is the hearty finish!

It doesn't look the prettiest, haha, but carbs really are the ultimate! With the rice, it was a perfect finish to the meal.
