Spacious Daegu Japanese restaurant: tonkotsu & cold soba, Myeonsikdang

In short

Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch (면식당 계명대점) is a ramen, soba and katsu restaurant on the second floor, right in front of Keimyung University's east gate in Dalseo, Daegu. The set for two included tonkotsu ramen, cold soba, a smoky mini buta-don (pork rice bowl), 2 pieces of mozzarella cheese katsu and a lemonade, eaten in a spacious, relaxed dining room, and alternating the tonkotsu ramen with the cold soba was the highlight. Verdict: the Myeonsikdang set for two is a safe recommendation for a first visit when choosing from the menu feels hard.

Wondering where to eat around Keimyung University? If you're looking for a lunch or dinner spot nearby, have a look at today's review. 💓 It's the story of a set for two at Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch (면식당 계명대점), where everything from the ramen to the katsu satisfied me 🍜

Where is Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch? Hours and parking

Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch is at 55 Seodang-ro 9-gil, 2nd floor, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, South Korea, and it's open 09:00-20:30 (last order 20:25). There's no dedicated parking lot, so if you're coming by car you'll need to use a nearby public lot or another place around the area where you can park.

On the other hand, it's easy to reach on foot, so I don't think it's much of a hassle for anyone looking for a place to eat near Keimyung University.

This time I ordered the set for two and got to try everything from ramen to cold soba, a rice bowl and katsu. The portions were generous and the taste was good too. If you're looking for a place to eat near Keimyung, it's worth a visit! haha

Visiting Myeonsikdang in front of Keimyung University's east gate
Exterior of Myeonsikdang on the second floor

Myeonsikdang is right in front of Keimyung University's east gate, so it was really easy to find. It's a quick walk from campus, which makes it handy after class and convenient for meeting up with friends. Maybe that's why it felt like lots of students come here.

How spacious is Myeonsikdang's dining room?

The moment you walk in, you'll be surprised at how big the place is. 😮 It's much bigger in person than in the photos! There are lots of tables with plenty of space between them, so it didn't feel stuffy at all.

I thought it would be good with friends, fine for eating alone without any pressure, and decent as a date spot near Keimyung too. It felt like you could eat in comfort even when it's busy, which I liked even more.

What comes in the Myeonsikdang set for two?

The set for two I ordered came with the five items below 🍜 You get to taste several dishes at once, so it's a perfect set for first-time visitors!

  • Tonkotsu ramen (pork-bone broth ramen)
  • Cold soba (chilled buckwheat noodles)
  • Smoky mini buta-don (grilled pork rice bowl)
  • Mozzarella cheese katsu, 2 pieces
  • Lemonade

Tonkotsu ramen: rich but not greasy broth

Ta-da ~~ look at that visual 🤤 The first thing I ate was the tonkotsu ramen!

The broth was rich but less heavy than I expected, so it went down easily! You could faintly taste the nutty depth of pork broth, and the noodles were nicely chewy and went really well with the soup.

If you like ramen, definitely try this one!

Cold soba: the perfect partner to alternate with tonkotsu ramen

The cold soba was clean and refreshing, through and through!

Cold soba in chilled broth

With its chilled broth it was just right for hot weather, and the buckwheat noodles were springy, the kind you keep slurping.

Alternating between the tonkotsu ramen and the cold soba cut the richness, and it was a really good combination. I recommend this pairing!

Smoky mini buta-don: the best dish of the meal

Smoky mini buta-don with a grilled aroma

True to its name, the smoky mini buta-don was a rice bowl with a gentle grilled aroma. The tender pork went well with the salty-sweet sauce, and the mini size made it easy to eat without feeling overwhelmed! Honestly this was my favorite, so next time I'm thinking of ordering a proper full-size buta-don?!! hahaha

Eaten together with the ramen it was filling, so the set is really well put together. haha If you can't decide, just order a set menu!

Mozzarella cheese katsu: long, stretchy cheese pulls

Cute name, right? Mozzarella cheese katsu! When I bit into it the cheese stretched out, which was fun to watch and fun to eat. haha Crispy outside and moist inside, so even as a side dish it was very satisfying!

If you like cheese, I definitely recommend it! I was totally satisfied haha

Lemonade: a tangy reset after the rich dishes

Lemonade included in the set for two

The lemonade that comes with the set was zesty and went really well with the food. Sipping it between bites of ramen or katsu cleansed my palate so I could enjoy everything to the end. I kept repeating rich -> zesty -> rich -> zesty, hahahahaha

Why Keimyung University students flock to Myeonsikdang

After going myself, I get why so many students come here!

  • It's right in front of Keimyung University's east gate, so it's easy to reach
  • The dining room is really big, so you can eat in comfort
  • The menu is varied: ramen, rice bowls, katsu and cold soba
  • The set for two is generous, so the value was decent too

Especially if you go with a friend, it's easy to share a bit of everything, so you'll probably be even happier with it! 🍜🍜 If you're after lunch near Keimyung, a date near Keimyung, or Japanese food in Sindang, I recommend giving it a visit. The food was reliably tasty, and above all the relaxed atmosphere for eating was great. If you're craving Japanese food near Keimyung, it's an easy place to drop by. 😊
