In short

Minja Hoetjip is a live-fish sashimi restaurant specialising in takeout inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung. The flounder-and-salmon set was packed to go and opened back at the room, where the plate was filled edge to edge with thick-cut fish, along with plenty of chojang (sweet chilli sauce), soy sauce, fresh wasabi and ssamjang. Takeout flounder and salmon set from Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin Fish Market

Hi, it's Kkomuldeogi :) The best part of a Jumunjin trip in Gangneung is wandering the fresh, lively fish market and packing up sashimi at a great price.

On this Gangneung trip, I picked up takeout from Minja Hoetjip inside Jumunjin Fish Market, a spot known among locals and travelers alike as a takeout sashimi hotspot.

Flounder and salmon are my absolute favorites among sashimi, so I packed a flounder+salmon set to eat back at the room. Freshness, thickness, value for money — all of it satisfied me. Here's my honest review.

What is Minja Hoetjip like inside the market?

Jumunjin Fish Market is bursting with energy, with sashimi restaurants lined up one after another — and among them, Minja Hoetjip stood out with its neatly kept tanks and friendly service, putting me in a good mood the moment I walked in.

The interior is clean and tidy, so you could sit and eat there too, but taking it to go — like I did, back to my accommodation — works just as well.

Takeout discount and free sides at Minja Hoetjip

Whether you eat in or take out, there's a takeout discount. And if you order specifically for takeout, they told me you also get abalone, sea squirt, whelk and a spicy fish stew (maeuntang) thrown in for free.

The tanks were packed with big, strong live fish, kept clean and clear with not a trace of scum — the kind of place that would put even hygiene-conscious diners at ease.

Salmon happens to be one of my favorite fish, so I was glad Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin Fish Market carries it. They caught and prepared the fish right after I ordered, and the packaging was neat and tidy too.

Neatly wrapped takeout sashimi pack

Opening the flounder and salmon set back at the room

Back at the accommodation, I unwrapped the pack and found fresh flounder and salmon piled thick across the whole plate. Inside the pack there was also a generous supply of essential sauces — basic chojang, soy sauce, fresh wasabi and ssamjang.

Maybe because it was fresh from the market, the texture had a springy moisture that's incomparable to fish sold refrigerated at a supermarket — perfect for wrapping up a night of travel with a cold beer or soju.

How was the salmon?

The salmon, with its vivid orange grain, had zero fishy smell — genuinely fresh — and was rich with fatty savoriness that melted the second it hit my mouth. Ridiculously good.

Salmon sashimi dipped in soy sauce and fresh wasabi

I dipped mine in soy sauce with fresh wasabi, and the savory, fatty salmon was seriously delicious, I swear.

Between the vivid orange flesh, dense pale marbling was packed in tight — the fattiness practically dripping just looking at it.

Thickly sliced live flounder sashimi

How was the flounder?

Freshly prepared live flounder had that signature springy, bouncy texture — genuinely amazing. The more I chewed, the more that clean, mild live-fish flavor came through, filling my mouth with a subtle natural sweetness. No fishy smell at all, so it was great for tasting the fish's true, clean flavor.

The fin — the flounder's highlight — was sliced thick, crunchy on the first bite and bursting with savory, rich depth the more you chew. Loaded with sharp fresh wasabi and dipped in soy sauce, the fattiness and the tang balance out perfectly.

A sashimi spread sized well for 2–3 people

How many people does the set feed?

It's a much better deal than eating at a regular restaurant, and 2-3 people can eat their fill. Rather than thin, floppy slices, the fish was cut thick with a proper, chewy bite.

If you're heading to Gangneung or Jumunjin, I recommend the flounder+salmon set from Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin Fish Market — great value, fresh, and perfect for takeout.
