Jumunjin sashimi takeout for a night in with a toddler: Ilchul Hoetjip

In short

Ilchul Hoetjip is a live-fish sashimi restaurant at Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon, that also sells snow crab, king crab and red crab. Traveling in Gangwon with a small child, the writer ordered halibut and rockfish sashimi to go, and Ilchul Hoetjip packed it with shrimp, abalone, whelk and sea squirt side dishes plus lettuce, garlic, chili, soy sauce, wasabi, ssamjang and chogochujang, so nothing had to be prepared at the room. For a quiet drink after the child was asleep, Ilchul Hoetjip's sashimi takeout was the right call.

Hi everyone~! Whenever I go to Gangwon, I absolutely have to eat sashimi haha. For me, Gangwon is basically a sashimi destination lol. Being this close to the sea, I really wanted some fresh sashimi with a drink, but traveling with a toddler means I can't sit leisurely at a restaurant late at night like I used to. So this time I decided to just pack the sashimi to go and bring it back to our stay~! I stopped by Ilchul Hoetjip near Jumunjin Fish Market, planning to enjoy it comfortably once the kid was asleep and I was off duty ^^

What kind of place is Ilchul Hoetjip?

Ilchul Hoetjip is a sashimi restaurant located in Jumunjin Fish Market that sells fresh live fish in season. Beyond seasonal seafood, it also sells snow crab, king crab, and red crab, so you can enjoy both sashimi and crab dishes in one place.

The signature menu is really varied — pufferfish sashimi, snow crab, king crab, red crab, seasonal sashimi platter, giant amberjack, red seabream, silver pomfret, live abalone, and more. I especially liked that you can taste different seasonal fish depending on the time of year. In winter you can get giant amberjack with proper fat on it, and in summer you can try seasonal fish like silver pomfret or red seabream — so if you're looking for a Jumunjin sashimi restaurant with a wide variety, there's fun in picking the menu too.

Seating and parking at Ilchul Hoetjip

Since Ilchul Hoetjip serves sashimi as well as snow crab and king crab, it seems like a spot many people looking for the best snow crab or king crab restaurant in Jumunjin would visit too. Having plenty of options when you want sashimi and crab at once also feels like an advantage.

There's space for over 150 people, so even a group can eat comfortably — it seems like a good spot for family trips, friend gatherings, or dates. Parking was also really convenient at Ilchul Hoetjip! Using the Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower gets you a free 1-hour parking voucher, which made visiting by car really easy haha.

What comes with the halibut and rockfish takeout?

This time we packed halibut and rockfish sashimi to go~!

Takeout didn't just mean they packed the sashimi alone — they also included shrimp, abalone, whelk, and sea squirt as sides (sukiadashi), so the set was more generous than I expected.

Lettuce, garlic, chili, soy sauce, wasabi, ssamjang, and vinegared chili sauce were all included too, so there was barely anything else to prepare at the room. Being able to pull it all out right after putting the kid to sleep — that's one of the little joys of traveling with a toddler haha.

The sashimi was great, but honestly just the abalone, shrimp, sea squirt, and whelk sides alone could finish a whole bottle of soju lolololol.

How did the halibut and rockfish taste at the room?

Doesn't the sashimi look chewy and delicious?!

The halibut had a chewy yet clean texture that I liked, and the rockfish felt a bit firmer than the halibut. Even though it's all sashimi, alternating between the two kept the texture interesting and I kept reaching for more without getting tired of it.

The fresh sashimi texture was genuinely the best, ugh. Personally I really love the halibut fin part — it has this savory, slightly crunchy texture that goes so well as a drinking snack. I dipped it in vinegared chili sauce, then in wasabi soy sauce, and just kept eating it lol.

This time we ate it as takeout because of our kid, but eating comfortably at the accommodation turned out to be its own kind of good haha. After a full day of playing with, bathing, and putting the kid to sleep, that plate of sashimi felt like it washed all the fatigue away. If you want proper sashimi during a Gangwon trip or you're looking for a Jumunjin sashimi restaurant, check out Ilchul Hoetjip! Especially if you're looking for the best snow crab or king crab restaurant in Jumunjin and want to enjoy sashimi at the same time, this is one I'd recommend.
