Hongdae cocktail bar for a couple's first date in 10 years: Rosetta
In short
Rosetta is a cocktail bar on Eoulmadang-ro between Hapjeong Station and Hongdae in Mapo, Seoul, serving signature cocktails inspired by famous paintings. On her first bar date with her husband in nearly 10 years, the writer tried the Monet-inspired Water Lily Pond, the Summer Sunshine topped with seaweed, and a fruit and cheese platter with ripe plums. At 21,000 won per cocktail, Rosetta's prices felt unfamiliar at first, but the verdict is a 100% yes to going back.

My first bar in 10 years: how was Rosetta in Hongdae?
Rosetta is a Hongdae cocktail bar that serves signature cocktails expressing famous paintings through taste and aroma. I was out in Hongdae on a date with my husband after a long time, and we stopped by this atmospheric cocktail bar. When I thought about it, it had been almost 10 years since I last went to a bar.
When I saw that one cocktail cost ₩21,000, I thought, "Is this just what cocktails cost now?" and felt the years go by, haha. But once I drank it, it wasn't just a pretty drink. It felt like a painting unfolded into flavor and scent, which made the place very memorable.
Rosetta's exterior, location and opening hours
Rosetta has a red awning and terrace seating, so it stands out at a glance even among the Hongdae alleys. The address is 35 Eoulmadang-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (1st floor), and it is open every day from 18:00 to 05:00 the next day.

The exterior was impressive from the start. The red awning and terrace seats together caught my eye right away in the Hongdae alley. When you open the door, the mood from outside carries naturally into the interior. It sits between Hapjeong Station and Hongdae, so it's a good spot to drop in for a date after dinner.

Inside Rosetta: red wallpaper and famous paintings
Inside Rosetta, deep red wallpaper, heavy furniture and framed famous paintings hung here and there all worked together.

It was glamorous overall but not overly formal, a place where you can sit comfortably and enjoy drinks and conversation. I came for a date with my husband, but the moment I walked in, this was the first thought that hit me.
"Women coming here with friends would absolutely love it."

It seemed like a great place to dress up with friends who love beautiful spaces and cocktails, take photos and talk for a long time.

Sure enough, as we spent time drinking, the place filled up with women guests before we knew it.
Rosetta also had classic cocktails, but since it was my first bar in ages, haha, I wanted something special and ordered from the signature cocktails inspired by famous paintings.

What does the Monet-inspired Water Lily Pond cocktail taste like?
The Water Lily Pond is Rosetta's signature painting cocktail inspired by Monet's work, and it was the one I chose. After the cocktail came out, a staff member added basil essence at our table.

The basil didn't just linger at the tip of the nose. It came through in the mouth as a distinct flavor of its own. The fruit, the herbal scent and the light fizz didn't rush in all at once but layered and spread in order. It was fresh and clean yet incredibly aromatic, and each sip felt a little different. It was like capturing the air of a pond with water lilies floating and the scent of green plants in one glass.
That was the moment I best understood the explanation that a painting had been expressed as a cocktail. Even as I write this, I want to drink it again.

The glass was super thin too, and the feel of it on my lips was so nice! I also remember the piece of celery that represented part of the painting, haha. Ah, I want to go again!
What does Summer Sunshine, my husband's pick, taste like?
Summer Sunshine is the signature cocktail my husband ordered, and as the name suggests it was a fresh, refreshing drink with the bright, vivid mood of midsummer. It wasn't just the familiar freshness of yuja (citron) and lemongrass. Many scents and flavors layered together, making it very rich.

In the mouth it didn't settle into one flavor. I tasted the brightness of fruit, the fragrance of herbs and a hint of saltiness one after another. If the Water Lily Pond felt like walking around a green pond, Summer Sunshine felt like breathing the air of a summer day in bright sunlight.
Both drinks are on the fresh side, but their characters differ, so it was fun to trade sips and compare. My husband said the gim (dried seaweed) on top was delicious, haha. It was seaweed with several flavors in it, and he really savored it bit by bit.
Rosetta's snack: a fruit and cheese platter with ripe plums
The fruit and cheese platter was the snack we ordered with the cocktails at Rosetta, and it came with cheese, several accompaniments and plums, a seasonal fruit.

The plums were perfectly ripe, sweet-tart and juicy. Between the aromatic cocktails, eating bits of fruit and cheese cleansed my palate and made the next sip taste even better. It isn't a hearty meal so much as a snack to pick at slowly while talking for a long time. I was curious which fruit would appear in each season and wanted to order it again in another season.

The cheerful atmosphere of Rosetta's staff
As memorable as the cocktails was the friendly vibe of Rosetta's staff. The people behind the bar seemed very chatty with the guests, haha.

I think it's because there were so many women guests, haha. The staff each had a distinct personality too. My husband looked at the person serving our table and was delighted all by himself, saying their hairstyle and outfit looked like Tanaka-san. Haha. Even their way of speaking and their vibe somehow suited the bar's concept.

₩21,000 a cocktail: would I go back to Rosetta in Hongdae?
The ₩21,000 price per cocktail at Rosetta felt very unfamiliar when I first saw the menu, since my memory is stuck 10 years ago, haha. But my chance of returning is 100%. Cocktails with rich aroma and flavor!! I want to experience them again!!
It was a satisfying place for a date with my husband, but next time I'd like to bring girlfriends, order a different painting cocktail each and compare them.
