Why I chose an S-curl mid-length perm over a magic straight perm

This time at Yeum Hair Bundang Jeongja Branch (예움헤어 분당정자점), I got an S-curl mid-length perm instead of a magic set perm. I'd been growing my hair for quite a while, so it felt heavy overall and the ends were a bit damaged. I usually get a magic set perm, so I wondered whether to do that again, but since it's summer I wanted a lighter change.

This time I was treated by senior designer Haneul rather than my usual designer. After looking at my face shape and the current state of my hair, she recommended an S-curl mid-length style over a straight perm, saying it would suit me better.

What is the interior of Yeum Hair Bundang Jeongja Branch like?

Baekgung Plaza 1, where the salon is, is a relatively new building, so everything felt clean, and I loved how bright and tidy the salon itself is.

Inside there are personal lockers, which made it easy to store my things, and there's also a styler (a clothes-refreshing machine), which seems handy for keeping your coat.

Shampoo area with massage recliners

The treatment space was roomy too, so nothing felt cramped. The shampoo zone has recliner chairs with a massage function, so your whole body can relax during shampooing and neutralizing. They're available to people getting a clinic (hair treatment), and I used one while neutralizing. It was so good!

Next time I want to get a clinic treatment here too. By the window there are magazines, books and book stands so you can read while getting your hair done, so the treatment time never got boring.

This is the price list I was given this time. The set and digital perm is ₩160,000 and the magic straight perm is ₩150,000, with an extra charge for hair length.

How the S-curl mid-length perm was done

It started with a cut to trim off the damaged ends. My hair was originally long, more than 10cm below my shoulders, with damage at the tips.

Senior designer Haneul trimmed off the damaged parts naturally, shaped it to a mid-length, and added layers without overdoing it. I'd been thinking of straightening it with a magic perm, but she explained that at this length, hair falling too straight could make the ends curl awkwardly.

What she recommended instead was the S-curl mid-length perm. It had been a while since I'd had a curly style, so I was a little nervous, but I decided to trust her.

The process was thorough. Applying heat with the digital machine was comfortable, and getting a shampoo in the massage chair while neutralizing melted away my tiredness. The shampoo itself was really refreshing too, which I loved.

What changed after the S-curl mid-length perm

The finished style is definitely much lighter than before. My hair feels less heavy to the touch, and drying time got shorter.

In summer I wash my hair a lot, and even when I just shake it dry, the curl mostly holds, so it's easy to manage. At first it felt a bit unfamiliar, not calm and sleek like a straight perm. Because of the curl, some parts looked slightly frizzy, but the upside was that the crown volume came up naturally. After a few days I got used to the style, and people around me said it suited me.

• The salon is spacious and clean overall, so it was pleasant to get treatments there.
• The massage chair in the shampoo zone was really comfortable, much more than I expected, so my body got to rest even during neutralizing time, and I was very satisfied.
• It's a quick walk from Jeongja Station, and parking is easy too, so bringing a car isn't a burden.
• At the end she even taught me how to blow-dry and tips for keeping the curl at home, which helped a lot.

Downside: S-curls can feel unfamiliar if you're used to magic straight perms

If you're used to a straight perm style, the curls may feel a little unfamiliar for the first few days after an S-curl mid-length perm. It felt a bit awkward to me at first too, but it became natural over time.

Final verdict on the S-curl mid-length perm at Yeum Hair

This was my third visit to Yeum Hair Bundang Jeongja Branch, and again I was happy with the result. I was especially pleased that senior designer Haneul doesn't just do the style you ask for, but recommends one after considering your current hair condition and even your face shape.

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to change up heavy long hair for summer, or who is considering a natural S-curl mid-length style. I plan to go back for my next treatment.
