Korean restaurant in Yangcheon: cheese cutlet at Haengbokhan Udon Gage

After running errands near Mok-dong, I visited Haengbokhan Udon Gage Sinjeongnegeori Station Branch (행복한우동가게 신정네거리역점) with my family for a simple meal. We ordered eomuk udon (udon with fish cake) and cheese donkatsu (breaded pork cutlet with cheese), and I found myself reaching more for the cheese donkatsu that day.

Is it close to Sinjeongnegeori Station, and is parking available?

It is near Exit 1 of Sinjeongnegeori Station, so I did not have to walk far after leaving the station. A notice said that about three cars can park in front of the restaurant.

Even though we visited a little after lunchtime, there were still quite a few diners. Takeout orders also kept coming in while we ate.

How do you order, and what is on the menu?

We ordered at the kiosk inside. It was convenient to look over the menu slowly before choosing, and menu posters were also displayed on the wall.

Besides udon, there were options such as jeyuk deopbap (spicy pork rice bowl), memil soba (buckwheat noodles), and old-style donkatsu, so a group could each choose something to their taste. The interior had a retro feel that reminded me of an old snack restaurant, and it was generally kept clean.

How were the portion, noodles, and broth of the eomuk udon?

My family and I ordered eomuk udon and cheese donkatsu. The eomuk udon arrived first, with a generous amount of fish cake. It was substantial enough for a meal.

The noodles were thinner and chewier than the thick udon noodles I usually expect. To me, the texture was slightly reminiscent of jjolmyeon, so it differed from familiar udon. The broth was a little strongly seasoned and salty for my taste. Still, with plenty of fish cake, it was fine for a warm bowl of noodles.

Why did the cheese donkatsu stand out more?

The cheese donkatsu had a crisp fried coating, and there was more cheese inside than I expected. I could see that it was packed with cheese as soon as I cut into it. The crisp coating paired well with the soft, savory cheese, making it the more memorable of the two dishes that day.

How was it for a simple family meal?

It was a good place to stop by on a day when I wanted a comfortable meal of familiar dishes such as udon or donkatsu. With rice bowls and memil soba among the choices, it was not difficult for a family to pick dishes. Its location near the station also made it easy to find when looking for lunch or dinner nearby.
