Late-lunch tonkatsu near Myeonmok Station, mixed katsu: Katsu Monster

In short

Katsu Monster Myeonmok is a Japanese-style tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant on Sangbong-ro in Jungnang, Seoul, near Myeonmok Station. At a late lunch at the bar-style seats, the blogger ordered the mixed katsu with cheese katsu, loin and fillet (18,000 won) and cold soba noodles (10,000 won), then finished the generous, 2-3 serving spread alone in 30 minutes. With freshly fried, crisp katsu, a quiet room and power outlets at the seats, Katsu Monster Myeonmok is a filling solo lunch spot in Myeonmok.

Can you go to Katsu Monster Myeonmok for a late lunch?

Katsu Monster Myeonmok (카츠몬스터 면목점) is open daily from 10:30 to 21:00, with a break only from 3 to 4 p.m., so any other time is fine to drop by. They also do delivery and takeout, so you can stop in whenever it suits you.

Sometimes you just crave fried food so crispy it practically scrapes the roof of your mouth. Katsu Monster Myeonmok has a big reputation for tonkatsu lunches in Myeonmok, so I stopped by for a relaxed late lunch.

Getting there from Myeonmok Station and the vibe inside

You can walk to Katsu Monster Myeonmok from Myeonmok Station, but it's also a comfy neighborhood spot that local buses go near, perfect for grabbing a meal when you're hungry. Crispy tonkatsu dishes are listed at the entrance, and they definitely caught my eye.

I walked in with high hopes for Myeonmok tonkatsu. It happened to be a quiet time, so I settled into a table bar-style seat and picked out some tasty things.

The inside is small, but the seating is laid out really efficiently. It isn't a delivery-only shop; they cook to order right there, which made me trust it even more. Each seat has an electronic ordering system, and the wall is lined with pamphlets showing all sorts of menu items, so browsing them made me even hungrier.

What I ordered at Katsu Monster Myeonmok: mixed katsu and cold soba

After some deliberation, I quickly ordered the mixed katsu (₩18,000) with cheese katsu, loin and fillet, plus cold soba noodles (₩10,000). That's basically trying Katsu Monster's signature dishes all in one go.

After a bit of waiting, the owner cooks everything quickly, hot and with care. Freshly fried and crunchy, this Myeonmok lunch was pure happiness.

A quiet neighborhood restaurant that's good for eating alone

At Katsu Monster Myeonmok, the cheese katsu seemed to be the popular item. The seats have outlets too, so it's a comfy place to eat alone while watching a few shorts on your phone. It's a neighborhood spot, not a busy downtown area, so it's that much quieter, which is a plus.

The tray that finally arrived was generous in every way. The crispy cheese katsu, loin and fillet stole the show. A lettuce salad and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) came as sides too, so I could finish the whole thing without feeling weighed down by the grease.

How big is the mixed katsu portion?

The mixed katsu and cold soba spread was seriously huge. It was honestly about 2-3 servings, but I was hungry and it tasted so good that I chewed slowly and still finished everything in about 30 minutes. Even the owner looked a little amazed at my appetite.

Cabbage and kkakdugi are refillable, so just ask whenever you want more. Deliveries kept coming in while I ate, which told me this is a proper local favorite.

Is the cold soba a good match for tonkatsu?

Katsu Monster's cold soba noodles (₩10,000) cut right through the greasiness of the tonkatsu, so a couple could happily order one to share. Under the sweet, tangy, ice-cold broth, there were Japanese-style noodles and plenty of grated radish, and it felt like it brought back my lost summer appetite. They sprinkled on plenty of seaweed too.

How were the batter and sauce?

The katsu batter at Katsu Monster is on the thick side. Because of that, even a few pieces left me feeling full, and I was happy about that. Sauce is set out at every seat, so you can enjoy it as savory or as sweet as you like.

Cheese katsu, loin or fillet: which was best?

If I had to pick one from the mixed katsu, it'd be the cheese katsu, loaded with cheese. The nutty, soft flavor was excellent. The cheese stretched out in long strings, a tonkatsu taste and texture you can't easily recreate at home.

Cross-section of the loin and fillet in the mixed katsu

The loin had a bit more fat, so it was even more savory. The fillet was the kind even dieters could enjoy, with a fluffy, juicy-inside charm.

Katsu Monster Myeonmok overall verdict

Among Myeonmok tonkatsu meals, Katsu Monster Myeonmok was a light yet special meal out for around ₩10,000 or so a dish. You can of course dine in, but it seemed like lots of katsu fans order delivery.

The charm of katsu fried crisp in hot oil right then and there is hard to beat. Dip it lightly in the sauce, or soak it in, and enjoy it generously.
