Seomyeon chicken pub, grapefruit highball and sweet half melon: Yetnal

Yetnal Tongdak & Tang Seomyeon Branch (옛날통닭앤탕 서면점) is a retro fried chicken and stew pub on Jungang-daero 680 Beonga-gil in Seomyeon, Busan, and the writer, who remembered the taste of the Yeonsan main branch, visited the newly opened Seomyeon branch. The writer ordered the half retro chicken and half melon set with a grapefruit highball and draft beer, and the crispy chicken paired surprisingly well with a melon that was sweeter than expected. For a casual drink with old-school market-style fried chicken in Seomyeon, Yetnal Tongdak & Tang Seomyeon Branch is a good fit.

Busan bar by Seomyeon Lotte with 4 fritter sauces: 5 Budu Twigimjip

5 Budu Twigimjip (5부두튀긴집) is a fritter-focused Korean snack bar in Bujeon-dong, Busan, near the back gate of Lotte Department Store in Seomyeon. The writer has been back at least four times for tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), fish cake, mul-tteok (rice cakes in broth), fritters and sundae (Korean blood sausage) with beer and soju. The writer loved 5 Budu Twigimjip's retro snack-shop interior, its four dipping sauces and the free Saewookkang shrimp crackers. Verdict: 5 Budu Twigimjip is a good pick when you want a light first or second round in Seomyeon instead of a loud bar.

With its open sea view and the pairing of spicy fried rice and refreshing yuringi, Bueokgan Chinese made a satisfying Haeundae date stop before a walk around Dongbaek Island.

Dallae Haejang Busan Dongnae is a newly opened 24-hour hangover soup restaurant near Megamart on Myeongnyun-ro in Dongnae, Busan. Jeonpo lunch date restaurant in Busan: baguette with gnocchi at Vinf

Vinf is a Western restaurant in Busanjin, Busan, near Jeonpo Café Street (전포사잇길). For lunch, the writer ordered green onion cream gnocchi, vongole pasta and a cider, and added 2 pieces of baguette for ₩900. The green onion made the gnocchi's cream sauce less rich, and the vongole pasta came with large clams. Vinf is neither too casual nor intimidatingly fancy, making it a good pick for a Jeonpo lunch date or blind date.

Songjeong, Busan Japanese spot: saba ochazuke and jumbo unaju, Yuok

Yuok (유옥) is a Japanese restaurant focused on eel rice bowls, on Songjeonggangbyeon-ro in Haeundae, Busan. The writer, a regular who returns whenever a restorative meal is needed, ordered the jumbo unaju (grilled eel over rice) set for 28,500 won and the saba ochazuke (grilled mackerel over rice with tea broth) set for 17,000 won. The thick eel had no off-flavors, the golden-grilled mackerel was not fishy, and both were finished cleanly as ochazuke. For a light, easy-on-the-stomach restorative meal in Songjeong, Yuok is a satisfying choice.
